Mildred opened her hands a crack and peered into her palms. The firefly immediately flew up and escaped her grip. She huffed and snuck up slowly on a moth.
-
Jack opened up the book again and read about the characters entering the ominous castle of king haggard. Jack felt tension in the air. The moths in the garden settled onto the lovely white blooms that opened to the stars like morning glories to the sweet summer sun.
-
Mildred reached out and caught one of the moths. 'Ha!' she exclaimed triumphantly.
-
Jack continued reading. King haggard was a terrifying man, old and worn down like a pile of old bones but intimidating as whatever left it there. Malice oozed from the character like a leaky faucet.
-
Mildred held the moth in her hands back into the castle, and hurried to her room. She let it go in her room and quickly shut the door.
-
Jack continued reading. It had been years since he was so taken with a book. It was as if he was enchanted.
-
Mildred grinned triumphantly and sat on her bed, unsure of what else to do before breakfast.
-
Jack was reading as the unicorn, which had donned the name lady amalthea, had seemingly given up on everything as she slowly lost her memories of being a unicorn. The prince of king haggard's kingdom, known as lyre, was trying to court amalthea and was doing a poor job of it.
-
Mildred leaned back against the headboard, looking up at the ceiling.
-
Jack closed the book and headed towards the kitchen. He'd hoped today would be a simple breakfast as servants fluttered through the halls making preparations.
-
Mildred watched her moth flutter around her room. She stood up and walked towards the door, carefully opening it, walking out, then shutting it. She figured it was about time for breakfast.
-
Jack walked up to the suits of armor outside of the kitchen and looked up. Just the night before Frederick was hiding in the rafters
-
Mildred walked down to the kitchen, finding Jack on her way. ‘Good evening, Jack,’ she said cheerfully.
-
Jack was snapped out of his fixation with the rafters. "Good morning Mildred. Did you sleep well last evening?" Jack asked to be polite.
-
Mildred shrugged. 'As well as I could've, I suppose. You?'
