"Frederick? Face me you coward!" Jack shouts angrily. "Calm down. I have a gift for you two, stupid bookworms. Just stop trying so hard." Frederick says before something heavy drops to the ground. A book titled the last unicorn

Mildred frowned. She picked up the book since she was closest, took a look at the cover before handing it to Jack.

"why would I ever stop trying to find you? Do you even care?" Jack asked, but of course there was no response.

Mildred looked up at the ceiling, trying to find a hole or some kind of bar Frederick could be looking through. ‘If it was dropped over there…’ she mumbled to herself, taking a few steps forward to where the book had been dropped until she was standing right where it’d been. She looked up, frowning.

"I feel like I'd be more comfortable with a ghost. How does a human even get up there?" Jack remarked as he stared at the dreadful ceiling.

Mildred pointed up. ‘It was dropped from there. Are there any trapdoors or holes in the ceilings that you know of? Maybe to get to an antic?’

"all we have are the rafters. There's a loft but the servants go there each day to tend to the bats." Jack said before looking at the book.

‘So how else would he be up there?’ Mildred asked, frowning. ‘Are there any other powers your eye would grant? Other than immortality.’

"well, there was an old theory that if you got both eyes you would be able to communicate with faefolk and if you got 3 you would be able to control them. With 4 royal vampire eyes if was fabled you could become the king of all that lived, but it's all a myth." Jack said

‘No invisibility? Wall-climbing? Flying?’ Mildred asked, still scanning the roof. ‘Is there a way he could be in possession of more than one vampire eye? Like he took one from whoever would take over the throne if you died, or Alexander and we didn’t realise..?’

"it wouldn't be likely. Even if he did, eating vampire eyes just has an immortality buff, nothing else. In any case, Alexander has no heir so there wouldn't be other vampires to take from. Any of our relatives wouldn't count." Jack said.

‘But then, how’d he get up there?’ Mildred asked, before she looked over at Jack, brows furrowed slightly in confusion. ‘So if you died, who would take over the throne?’

"if I died, Nosfera would look over the kingdom until Alexander awakens. If both me and Nosfera died, they'd search for a archduke or Duchess to commit a blood moon ceremony." Jack said.

‘That makes sense,’ Mildred nodded, stepping away from where the book had dropped. She didn’t want another one to fall on her. ‘What now?’

"I don't know, maybe.... I think I'll read that book." Jack said. He couldn't think of anything else to do except go to bed
