"I'm afraid I slept late, I was enraptured by the book that Frederick dropped yesterday. I'll loan it to you after I am finished reading it." Jack said as he opened the door to the dining hall

'What is it about?' Mildred asked. She hadn't thought much of the book since the night before.

"it's about a unicorn who goes on a mystical yet somber journey to find out where all the other unicorns have gone. She's accompanied by a slightly foolish wizard in training and a kind bandit woman. Jack said

‘Sounds interesting,’ Mildred said. ‘Do you know why Frederick gave it to you?’

"maybe he's trying to tell me he's a unicorn? Highly unbelievable. He needed my eye for immortality, of course he's not a unicorn." Jack said as he sat down.

‘I mean, he doesn’t have a horn on his head either, so I highly doubt it,’ Mildred sat, sitting down in the seat closest to him.

"a unicorn turned human wouldn't have a horn. Frederick would instead be driven mad by the fact that immortality and power were stolen from his soul. He'd have been a bumbling fool before he even got here." Jack said

‘It might be a metaphor,’ Mildred said. ‘That he’s one in a million and accompanied by a fool and an empath.’

"he is one in a million, but only thanks to me. The companions are really what trouble me." Jack said. He decided that now would be a good time to ring the breakfast bell

‘Perhaps. But there’s no sign of his companions, is there?’ Mildred asked.

"not unless they're rats." Jack said. Wilhelm brought out the food. It was a simple plate of pancakes with several toppings to add to them. The pitcher of milk was different today. It was chocolate milk.

Mildred thanked Wilhelm and twisted the end of her napkin. ‘Um… maybe they can shapeshift?’ she suggested with a short chuckle.

"I never considered that possibility before... Regardless though, that was not mentioned in the book." Jack said as he took two pancakes.

‘Fair enough,’ Mildred said, taking three.

Jack decorated his pancakes with berries before covering them in blueberry syrup. He then added powdered sugar
