‘Fair enough,’ Mildred said. ‘I’m going to go to bed.’ She was about to walk off before she stopped in her tracks. ‘One last thing. Do you know how to get rid of nightmares?’
-
"I'd recommend a dreamcatcher, it's a foreign concept but I heard it works. You could also catch a jar of moths, butterflies or light bugs. They have a soothing effect" Jack said
-
‘Thank you,’ Mildred said, smiling in gratitude. ‘I’m off to bed now. Goodnight. Or, good day, I guess.’
-
"good day Mildred." Jack said. He then walked to his room, carrying the last unicorn and the sealed pitcher.
-
Mildred watched him walk away for a moment, before turning to walk to her own room. She made her way down the hall, then settled at a window to watch the sun rise. There wasn’t a window in her room, after the incident of her trying to escape.
-
When jack got to his room he sat on the bed in his room and pulled out a tin of sugar coated hazelnuts. It was a snack for his early morning reading.
-
Mildred grew disinterested waiting for the sun to rise. She walked down to her room and looked for a spiderweb or a couple of moths. She found a spider, which she squealed at and stepped on.
-
Jack poured himself a cup of blood and started reading. The book was about a unicorn who was trying to find where all the other unicorns had gone as they had disappeared. It was a very melancholic story for such a bright and hopeful creature. Jack was enthralled by the writing of this unicorn.
-
Mildred found a spider web in the corner of the closet. She carefully grabbed it, trying to keep it intact, grimacing at the sensation on her hands. She moved it to above her bed, hoping it wouldn’t fall on her in the middle of the night.
-
Jack read through, hoping to find out with the unicorn what happened to the others when a harpy was brought up. The harpy was almost like a witch, that matched what Jack knew about harpies.
-
Mildred lay down on her bed, staring up at the ceiling, lost in thought.
-
Jack finally decided to put down the book when his blood reserves got low. He tried to go to sleep to keep himself not grasping for any sort of red liquid he could see.
-
Mildred sighed, rolling over on her bed and closing her eyes. She pulled the thin blanket up to her chin.
-
Jack woke up the next morning and checked his room for the book. It was no longer on his bed and instead in his coffin. The room was disturbed.
-
Mildred woke up to the spider web on her face. She screamed and clawed it off, sighing in relief when it wasn't the boogieman come to corrupt her soul. She washed her hands and face in the basin.
