I left the hospital in pain, feeling completely distraught over everything. Yes, I was unable to do much because of my limitations, but I would give my life for the greater good. I shouldn't have snapped, but I felt somewhat justified. I would do what I could to defend Aries, and not fail miserably. I heard the sounds of marching boots as I took off towards my coffee shop, ready for another night of uneventful business.
-
The wind blows heavily beneath the grey sky. Zacharius' long hair streams out to the side as they stand on a rocky cleft, overlooking the soon-to-be battlefield. By their side, the captain of the bladeers discounts from his horse. The captain brushes back his short, black hair, gazing down at his lieutenant with serious blue eyes.
"This is it. Are you ready, Lieutenant Ulbritch?" he questions. Zacharius looks sorrowful towards the ground, unable to answer. Kholer then speaks again. "This is the time to put aside any personal issues. Lives depend on you."
Aries brings their eyes up from the ground, widened in realization, then they sharpen their eyes to a cold-blooded gaze. "Yes, sir."
Just then, Kase runs to the captain's side. "Captain Kholer, the Kateris have been spotted!"
The captain nods, then looks again to Aries. "It's time to end this. HYAH," he shouts, cracking the reins of his horse, bolting down the steep hill.
Zacharius mounts their horse and then calls out to the other soldiers. "CHARGE!"
Hordes thunder down the hill as dust arises in the distance, accompanied by the enemy's thundering horses. -
I had just entered into the shop when I had the faint feeling of something going wrong. I quickly grabbed a skull mask, threw on a hood and closed the shop early. "Kuso.. Why the hell am I doing this? After what happened, I should be executed for my crimes.", I thought as I shuttered the windows before touching the talisman. The sword clanked into place, and with a quick turn of my heel, I barreled to the sounds of combat, my heart beating out of my chest in fear.
-
Arrows fly and swords cash on the battlefield as the two armies wage war. Among the multitude of soldiers, Zacharius darts through the crowd, in the back of their horse. Aries grips the reins in one hand as a sword spawns in their other taking an upward slash at the enemy soldier before them. Both horses rear up in fright, but as Aries knocks the enemy off their horse, the horse flees.
Kase joins Zacharius' side as Aries gallops off again. "Lieutenant, have you seen the captain?"
"With the multitude of enemy forces, it's a wonder I can see the ground," Aries replies grimly.
"You don't think the old man ran off to face Duran alone, do you?"
"Ugh. Wouldn't surprise me," they mutter in response. "Have our men fall back. Prepare an archer ambush from the edges of the canyon. That should make them fall back a bit, or at least buy a little time to take a few men deeper onto enemy lines to locate Captain Kholer."
Kase nods. "Got it."
"Keep an eye out for anyone mixed up in the battle, as well," Zacharius adds.
Kase looks to them in stupor. "Huh? What are you talking about? Are you okay?"
"Don't worry about me. Just keep the others safe." Before another word is spoken, Zacharius rides towards the enemy lines. -
My feet pounded the ground rapidly as I made my way up the hills to the sound of conflict, urging myself to go farther and farther. After spying many bodies around me and more troops huddling together, I bolted past them, not looking back. "They're here. I know it. I hope I'm not too late.", I thought as I watched Kase stare towards me.
-
Kase sharpens her eyes, watching the man push through the troops. "HEY," she calls out to him, "What the hell are you doing?! You're not authorized to be here. This is a war zone; you're gonna get yourself killed, idiot!"
-
I wanted to say something, but the only word that came out was just simply: "Later." I then glanced over the hill in blunt seriousness. "Farewell. If we see each other again, please keep them safe.", I said as I crested over the hill and ran out of sight, the yelling going faint.
-
Riding their horse across the dusty ground, Zacharius narrows their eyes, sharpening them to scan the battlegrounds ahead, but to their surprise, there seems to be a calm in the wave of troops. The field ahead seems desolate. The area is so quiet, as Aries slows their horse to a walk, the ground can be heard crackling from lack of water. "The plan must be working, then. If the troops are falling back for the ambush, the enemy should be taking the bait to follow them. But...where is Captain Kholer?" A gleam of sunlight from a brief break in the clouds catches on the ground, causing Aries to redirect their eyes to the light, and their ears perk up in curiosity. "Huh?" Carefully, Aries dismounts and approaches the area to get a closer look of the object, but as they kneel down to uncover the object buried in the dust, something appears spook the horse in an instant, and the mare bolts back towards their men without Zacharius. "Meleluna!" they cry in a startled but fed-up tone, then grumbling to themself. "'Get a mare,' they said; 'they're smarter than stallions and more focused'. Ugh!" Zacharius rolls their golden eyes, groaning and crossing their arms as their ears lay back in annoyance.
Zacharius goes back to scratching at the ground, uncovering the shining object. In a single pass over the object as they are digging, a razor-sharp feeling slices their finger, and they pull their hand back with an utterance.
"Au! Scheiß..."
Carefully, Aries creates a knife from their dark magic, using the very tip to dig through the dirt and uncover the rest of the object, revealing a pile of broken glass. Part of the object remains intact, forming half a sphere. Aries gasps, recognizing the broken vessel.
"Kholer's elixir bombs." Zacharius gives a tired sigh. "Guess I'll carry on, myself," they scoff, glancing back up the hill. "Surely Meleluna will find her way to the others, as always." Shaking their head, Zacharius goes on by foot. While the lieutenant marches on, the mare does find her way to company, but none of the soldiers. She stops on the hill with a gentle exhale, just some distance from am individual on his way down the hill. -
I gathered all of what I had and made my way down the hill, glancing over to see them on a horse. "I'm not too late!" I pushed myself and came to a rough stop nearby, not looking towards them and holding my blade towards my chest.
-
Zacharius carries on, not bothering to look back, allowing their curiosity to lead them on. Growing tired of walking, they open their black feathered wings and take to the sky.
"Hm," they say to themself, "rather odd that I can't find anything else from the captain. The glass was definitely from one of his elixir bombs, but, there was no proof of an explosion anywhere near the broken flask. So, then, that wouldn't be there, unless—"
Spinning back around in the air, Zacharius dodges to the left just as a sharpened arrow flies past their right wing. When they finish their spin, Aries looks to the ground below to find enemy troops coming out from the canyon's rocky ridges, drawing their bows and firing arrows to the sky. "It was bait for an ambush! No problem, I can take them down, myself."
"Ulbritch, fall back!" a voice suddenly commands.
Zacharius darts down to the ground, spotting an older man on a horse, hiding behind a cleft.
The arrows fly towards the two, but Captain Kholer flings his arm out, creating a shield of darkness to stop the arrows.
"Captain, were you not captured?"
"No, you knucklehead. I was gathering information. Were you listening to the plan on our way here? Ah!" he frankly replies, "Of course not; you were too busy upset about other things."
"Captain, I—"
"Now isn't the time to apologize. Fall back. We'll lead them to our trap."
As the two turn around and begin to flee, the Kateris start to pursue l, but over the cries of war from the dozens of archers, a loud mocking voice addresses Aries. "Yes, listen to your daddy, and maybe he won't die as quickly as your first."
In a heartbeat, everything freezes Zacharius, but in that moment, their breath becomes stifled, their body begins to burn, and their eyes shrink in maniacal anger. Drawing their sword, Zacharius grits their fangs together, growling. "Grrrr..."
Captain Kholer reaches his hand out to stop Zacharius, but before he can say a single word, Aries cries out in hellish fury, flying straight for Duran. "Sprich nicht über meinen Vater, du Hurensohn!"
"NO," Kholer warns, but he is unable to follow after Zacharius as archers soon block off the path with their horses.
"Du wirst durch diese Klinge sterben!" -
I looked over the plains as I watched them fly towards a direction, leaving them all alone to deal with archers. "Damn it.", I grumbled as I bolted into the enemies with my sword, slashing their hands off one by one as I jumped from one archer to the next. The fury building inside of me was reaching a point of breaking, and I needed to let it out. After one fell swoop, I fell to me knees, clutching my chest in pain, but noting that all were disarmed, and fleeing the scene. "Can't stop.. Must keep going." I stood back up and chased after Aries, not looking back. "Yes. Save them as though you saved HER.", a voice called out as I froze with fear. "Who the hell are you to know what happened?", I growled as I continued on my way, the voice again teasing me. "You will fail, they will die, and your efforts will be wasted. Such a silly being you are. Do you not remember your childhood? I enjoyed their cries of pain and relished their sorrows." I stopped and shook my head. "If I find you, I promise you.. that you're next."
-
Sparks fly as Zacharius clashes swords with Duran. The two spin about, attempting to attack but getting countered. A deadly waltz of blades commences as they stare the other down.
"You have no place in the world," Duran says, taking a stab at Aries.
Aries vanishes into a cloud of darkness, reappearing behind Duran and sweep kicking him down. They then spin and slam their sword down for him, but he rolls away before the blade catches him. "I have a right to be here, but murderers like you belong in the underworld."
"Then kill me," Duran dares, jumping up, "so that you, too, can be in your rightful place." He deflects Zacharius' strike, then forcing his sword against theirs.
"If it means being able to torment you in the afterlife, I'll gladly," the mage grimly replies, swifly retracting their sword and slashing upwards.
Aries knocks Duran's sword out of his hands and takes another swing at him, slashing across his shoulder. But Duran, in turn, pulls out a knife and makes a cut across Aries' left arm, then kicking them to the ground.
Zacharius tumbles across the ground, crashing into a rocky wall headfirst, gripping their stomach after coming to a stop. Dazed, Aries lies on the ground, completely vulnerable as Duran takes up his sword and rushes for Aries. -
I stared in utter disgrace towards the sword being lifted above their head. I then felt no control over my actions, my fatigue vanishing as I saw them from over the hill. Now led by blinding rage and furious beyond all comprehension, I barreled down the slope, all the while feeling my heart beat in my ears deafeningly. "I will not let this happen again. Mark my words.", I growled and lightly slid them out if the way as I took the hit. Suddenly, all felt numb. I looked down to see the blade sticking out of my lower left leg, and a screaming pain slowly making its way up my body into my brain. I looked towards them, hoping they'd be okay, even through my rather inconceivable outburst earlier, I felt protective of them.

"(Gasp) Revvie!" Zacharius sits petrified in shock and sheer horror, reaching out to Revelation as their heart drops. At some point, they stand to their feet still in a daze. "You monster!" they growl, staring Duran down.
"I'm saving him. Your witchcraft will only corrupt him more and more. Now, then," the man says, dipping his blade in a glass container of fuzziness liquid.
Excorlix, Zacharius' mind utters. They then keep a stern glare on Duran as he slowly lower his sword from the glass. If I destroy Duran now, my people will be safe... Zacharius then looks to Recelation, who appears to be writhing in pain. But, if I don't help Revelation, he may be lost... Growling and gripping their hair, Zacharius violently shakes their head, having an inward battle. Carry out your mission and save your people! But would you really let your lover die for the sake of a battle that may be lost? Don't forsake your people! Don't betray your lover!
Twitching and trembling, Zacharius pulls at their green hair, feeling the intense pain of burning and stinging before breaking out into manic rage. "I—I don't—KNOW! RAAAAAAGH!" Their whole body becomes engulfed in a purple and white flame of energy.
The wind picks up and kicks rocks and dust into the sky, spiraling round as if a tornado is forming and Aries is in the eye. Zacharius' form becomes a complete shadow, and their eyes glow entirely golden with white tears flowing, getting wicked up into the air by the wind. Their black wings spread out, and on the top of their head, two pointed objects grow, coiled and protruding to the sky. And from behind them, a whip-like tail of some sort emerges. In a flash of light, the flame dispurses and Zacharius stands before Duran. Out from their green hair projects two brown ram horns, and behind them, a slender black tail—pointed at the end. And their top fangs have grown so long that they show even when their mouth is closed.
Zacharius darts their golden eyes over to Revelation, and their gazes meet. Aries trembles, holding back tears. -
I gasped silently, gazing towards their current form in both shock and amazement. Though a bit fearful, I quickly pulled the sword out of my leg and doused it with liquid. After a few moments, the pain subsided as I slowly stood up and out of their way, grunting after each step. It would only be temporary, but I knew just how to spend my moment. I looked towards the unholy abomination that I had saved them from and slowly, patiently, made my way towards them. "I have questions for later, but for now, I think we have an irritation to send to hell.", I stated as I glanced toward them, ready to give my life for the greater good if needed.
