Mildred was struggling to find excuses for Jack. ‘I- Well, it still wasn’t your fault! How could you have known that was going to happen?’

"I... I... I don't know! I should've just stayed in bed. I was too young to be up that late anyways. Alexander sent me to bed at 3 I should've been long asleep when I went and got him attacked." Jack said

'I get why you'd think that, but I stand by my point. It wasn't your fault, Jack, just a coincidence.'

"you can believe that all you want. It doesn't matter." Jack said. He rubbed his eye patch.

‘I-I guess. But what’s done is done. You shouldn’t blame yourself, Jack,’ Mildred said quietly.

"why shouldn't I? It's just another member of my family lost because of me. I'm responsible for the loss of my whole family. None of them would be gone if I wasn't here today." Jack said. He thought a lot about it, but it was rare he ever voiced it aloud. His mother died from his conception, his birth drove his father to vaporize himself and a selfish act at just 1000 years old caused his brother to be trapped in between death and life.

‘Jack, your parents wanted you. They wouldn’t have made you if they didn’t want you. It’s in a vampire’s biology that their body can’t handle multiple children, right? That wasn’t your fault, it was bound to happen,’ Mildred said, trying to make him feel better.

"my father didn't want me to be born if it meant his wife would be gone. I was less important." Jack said. Jack knew this was true because his father proved it. His dad definitely wasn't there to say otherwise.

'Did your dad actually say that? When he died he was mourning his wife. He probably didn't think about you or Alexander in the moment,' Mildred said.

"i don't know what he said. I was an infant. I wasn't even in a stage to passively remember feelings." Jack said. His first memories were from his 400th year of life when he had a cake thrown at his face by a ruthless hulder maiden who thought it was fun to tease children.

Mildred sighed. She didn’t know how to make it better, so she stayed quiet.

"on a less sad note, here's a fun fact about vampire children, we're REEEEEEALLY late bloomers. We only start walking when we're around 90 years old" jack said.

Mildred chuckled. ‘So you’re a helpless baby for nearly 100 years?

"yes. It's not that long when you consider how my kind live for an eternity. Don't your kind start losing the ability to take care of themselves at 90?" Jack said
