"well, I don't suppose you've tried fried potatoes? You're in for a treat. I can't really explain them but they're great." Jack said walking up to the stall with the hissing cauldron. "An order of fried potatoes, and mushrooms please." Jack said to the young lady working at the stall. "My lord, we deal in oils here. Two jars of oil for two orders." She said. Jack glared a bit and furrowed his eyebrows. "That's something you should label. I haven't heard of anyone carrying oil around. How about I have duke varney send you two sacks of potatoes?" Jack negotiated. The woman nodded.
-
Mildred looks between them, finding this interaction very strange. What would a person even do with that much oil?
-
The woman dumped a cup full of sliced potatoes into the cauldron which bubbled even more. She threw some small mushrooms into a different cauldron.
-
Mildred watched curiously. She made a mental note that if she ever did go back to the human town, to see if negotiating prices was possible.
-
"every once in awhile a business will ask a strange price. We usually have them label their stands as well as obtain permits but every once in awhile a business slips through the cracks." Jack said, slightly irritated at the rude demeanour of the vendor. The nearby shopkeeps watched the stall nervously.
-
'How curious,' Mildred said, watching the vendor make the food.
-
Eventually the fries started to float and after a few minutes the vendor scooped them out and poured them into a container before adding a healthy drizzle of salt and tossing them to mix the salt. The fried mushrooms took much less preparation but was served with a small disposable cup of ranch. "Take your food and leave." The vendor said dismissively. The crowd seemed to panic
-
Mildred blinked and glanced at the crowd, then back at Jack. She didn’t think cursing the vendor out would help.
-
Jack looked uneasy as he took the fried food and walked away. He wasn't going to fight in the street over their blatant rudeness
-
Mildred quickly followed, falling back into step beside him. 'How queer.'
-
"out of all the reactions I get, the rudeness and disdain is the worst." Jack said
-
‘I don’t get why people hate you. You’re one of the nicest people I’ve met,’ Mildred said, leaning her head on his shoulder as they walked.
-
"it's hard to change your mind about someone when you've only ever seen them in a bad light." Jack said
-
‘I suppose. But what bad things have you done, then? Or do people just spread rumours?’ Mildred asked, looking up at him.
-
"people had a bad opinion of me from the start of my rule. Not only was I not as popular as my brother but I also carried out the gruesome execution on his traitors. It left a bad taste in their mouths." Jack said. He couldn't exactly blame them even if it was people who planned to kill both himself and Alexander.
