‘Back up a bit, you’ve been in the throne for 1000 years,’ Mildred said, still trying to wrap her head around that, ‘and your people want you to marry and have an heir despite thinking you’re too young to rule, which would obviously make you too young to marry and have an heir- Who would you even marry, anyway? Not including Nosfera. Marrying your brother’s fiancé is just weird.’
-
"the only person they'd approve of would be some noble women with impossible standards. I don't want to marry the main person they think is capable and I don't want to find someone they want me to marry." Jack said
-
‘Fair enough. I’ve never understood marrying somebody you don’t love. Honestly, your citizens should be glad you’re their king,’ Mildred said. ‘Or, acting king, anyway. It’d be a tough thing to do. And you’re just a person. Everyone makes mistakes.’
-
"my mistakes are far worse than most. After all, this wouldn't be a problem if I went to bed when I was supposed to that day." Jack said. It had always been a point of guilt in his life. It was His worst mistake ever.
-
‘And what happened that day? I’m sure it couldn’t have been that bad,’ Mildred said, leaning back in her chair.
-
"I walked in while the sun was rising. I was attacked by Talia, he jumped in the way to save me from the light and the knife and sunlight made my brother sleep for a thousand years. It wouldn't have happened if I wasn't there." Jack said. It was almost malicious of him in his mind
-
‘Alexander? Talia was one of the horrible humans, right?’ Mildred asked.
-
"yes. The morning I incidentally caused my brother's death like state." Jack said. He remembered that guilt.
-
Mildred blinked. ‘You realise that wasn’t your fault, right? That was Talia’s fault, not yours-‘
-
"it wouldn't have got him stuck dormant, sleeping like death if I wasn't there. Knives don't kill vampires." Jack said
-
‘You were just minding your own business. It was Talia’s fault. Talia literally tried to kill you,’ Mildred said.
-
"if I wasn't there for him to protect from the sunlight he wouldn't have been struck with a knife reflecting sunlight." Jack said
-
‘There was no way you could’ve known it was going to happen,’ Mildred countered.
-
"but if I'd just went to sleep he'd have never been in danger." Jack said. It was a tough subject. A tragedy unlike any other where it's not directly his fault, but it still wouldn't have happened without him.
-
‘I get why you think that, but if Talia hadn’t tried to attack you, it would’ve taken you longer to figure out she was a bad person, right?’ Mildred said.
