At that point Anne's mother entered the bakery her hair tied back and an apron wrapped round her waist.

'We're going to school,' Anne told her mum.

Anne's mother nodded then saw Lily in her borrowed dress and Anne in her uniform. "Do you not have uniform?" She asked curiously

'She usually goes to a private tutor.'

Lily nodded.

Mariella nodded. 'Right.'

"Ok, I'll see you later" Lily states quietly making her way to the door.

Mariella narrowed her eyes suspiciously but let them go.

"That was close" Lily sighed as soon as they were out of earshot.

Anne nodded. 'Very,' she said. 'I think Mother has her suspicions already.'

"She's gone off me quite a bit since I was in the hospital" Lily sighed.

Anne pursed her lips. She didn't want to worry or upset Lily, so she didn't say anything more on the topic.

Lily glanced at Anne and smiled. "So what do you learn at school?"

'Maths, History, Geography, Reading and Writing,' Anne said. She carried a satchel, which held her slate and things.

Lily stared blankly at Anne and laughed shakily. "What the hell is gogra-phy?" She asked saying it wrong
