Jess ran after Kent, seeing the gun. "Buddy, what happened? You have to tell me, buddy," Jess said, running her hands through Kent's hair.
-
Kent stared into space, then at his bloodied hands. "Boom," he said quietly, blandly.
-
-
Jess's heart was pounding so hard that it felt like it would beat right out of her chest. "A gunshot, buddy?"
-
He kept staring at his hands, his silence communicating an affirmative answer.
-
Crap. Jess ran out to the living room, grabbed her cell phone, and ran back to Kent. She quickly dialed her mom's cell phone number. It went to voice mail. She tried her dad's cell phone, but still no luck. Jess dropped her phone. Does this mean... "Kent, buddy, what happened?"
-
Kent looked up and stared at the wall in front of him. Images of the event flashed through his mind. His parents' screams, the gunshots, the dark figure, the smell of Lo Mein mixed with fresh blood. 101,592. The total mileage on the car."101592," he said, still lacking feeling.
-
Tears ran down Jess's face. "What does that mean?! Damn it... what's going on?!"
-
-
Kent blinked, repeating the number. "101592. 101592." It was like he was... broken.
-
Jess sat on the floor, covering her face with her hands. "Buddy... What do you mean...?"
-
The scene flashed yet again before his eyes, the splattered blood, the speedometer at zero. The echoing gunshots... He blinked yet again, his mouth attempting to form the words, but failing. He clamped his mouth shut, his eyes fixed on his hands. The blood was now dried, caked into his fair skin.
-
Jess calmed herself a bit, and stood up to get a towel. "Let's clean you up."
-
Kent still faced away from Jess, unseen tears slowly trickling down his dirtied face. They left clean paths behind amidst a sea of dark red and brown stains.
-
Jess wet the towel, and wiped the dried blood off of Kent's skin. "Can you try to tell me what happened, buddy?" she asked, dreading the response.
