Kent watched the conversation, ringing his hands together.
Their father raised his voice a bit. "If you want to stay, be my guest, Jess. One of us could stay here and one of us could bring Kent to Vermont. But we're sure as hell not going to argue about this. Now now." -
*Not now.
-
"It's now or never, Dad. If we put this off, we're never gonna talk about it, knowing you," Jess said angrily.
-
Their father sighed. "We will, just not now." He gave her an angry look, desperation also in his eyes. Not with Kent here. Please.
-
"Fine," Jess said, opening the car door, and climbing out. She slammed the door and stormed away from the car. I don't need this...
-
Kent watched Jess leave out of his window. It had started to rain. The drops of water hit the metal of the car, making soft pit, pat sounds.
-
Jess walked down the sidewalk towards the city. She got a taxi, and told the taxi driver her address. She watched the rain hitting the road as they drove. Ugh. I hate rain.
-
Kent's mother sighed. "Well, that's that, then." Their father put the car in gear and pulled out onto the road. They reached a stoplight.
-
After a few minutes, Jess reached the house. She let herself in, using the key she always kept on her.
-
A dark figure ripped open the drivers' side door. A gun was pointed into the car, and incoherent screaming was coming from his mouth. Kent sat concealed in the shadows, watching silently. Two gunshots rang out. The door next to him was jostled open. The dark figure placed the gun next to Kent's lap and stood in the doorway for a few seconds before running off.

Jess sat on the couch and turned on the TV. She pulled out her phone, deciding to text Kent, since she knew he always kept his phone with him. its gonna be okay, buddy. mom and dad will snap out of it. we wont have to move. She hit send, and dropped her phone next to her on the couch.
-
Kent sat motionless in the back seat, staring ahead of him. Blood was splattered all over the place; on his face, in his hair, on his hands. His phone vibrated in his pocket. He opened the door, taking the gun and slipping it into his pocket. The car was a few minutes from home. He walked there, ignoring the still vibrating phone in his pocket.
-
A few minutes passed, and Kent didn't answer. Jess stood up and opened the door, only to find Kent standing there, covered in blood. "Oh my god... What happened, buddy? Are you hurt?"
-
Kent stood still, his face frozen in an expression of nothingness. He walked inside, past Jess, and stood at the table. He took out the gun and placed it on the table. He walked to his room silently, unseen tears streaming down his face.
