"We feel that this isn't the right school for Kent's... needs... Which is why we regret to inform you that we will no longer have Kent attend our school, Mr. and Mrs. Baker."
Kent tried to envelope himself in numbers... Lots of numbers... 10, 20, 35, 46, 52, 87, 94.... 1134678. His school ID. -
Jess looked at Kent, and saw him fiddling with the zipper on his jacket. He didn't look any more upset than he had been the moment before, but Jess knew him better than to judge his feelings based on what he was showing.
-
Mrs. Baker gasped. "What? Are you kidding me? Do you know how hard we fought to get Kent to come here? Three years of appeals and law suits! And you're letting him go because of what others have done!?"
Mr. Baker shook his head and placed his hand on his wife's reassuringly. "Honey, maybe it's best that we do put Kent in a school that's more welcoming," he said pointedly, glaring at the principal.
Kent sat still and dropped the zipper. He looked up at everyone's faces with sad eyes. His eyes were always sad; always weighed down with negative emotions, except when it was just him and his family... And Bryan. Bryan was part of his family too. -
Jess clenched her fists. "Screw this. If Kent leaves this school, so do I. Come on, Kent, let's go home." She put her arm around Kent, and walked out of the office and out the school doors.
-
Kent's parents lingered in the office to gather up his paperwork and belongings. The school resource officers had apparently emptied his locker while they were in the office.
Kent walked with Jess, frowning. "Jess... But Bryan," he met her eyes. He didn't want her to leave Bryan just because of a problem he caused. It was his fault that he was leaving the school. He knew it was... Somehow. -
Jess smiled at Kent sympathetically. "It's okay, buddy. He graduated early, he won't have to go to school anymore. He can come stay with us, and we'll see him everyday. Sound good, buddy?"
-
Kent nodded. "Okay."
Their parents caught up to them a few seconds later.
"Alright... Guess we'll have to do some researching, huh?" Mr. Baker chuckled hot-headedly.
Seeing all of the hubbub, Bryan walked towards Jess. "What's going on? Is -" He was stopped by a curt nod from Mrs. Baker.
"They kicked Kent out." -
-
Jess smiled sadly at Bryan. "I'm leaving the school too. If Kent leaves, I leave."
-
Kent's parents took Kent out to the car. "Come meet us when you're done, Jess," her father said.
Bryan sighed. "I guess that shouldn't be a problem. I'll miss you like hell, though..." He took her hand in his. "But do what you've got to do for Kent. He deserves better than this hell of a place." -
Jess smiled. "Thanks, Bry. Really. Kent's happiness means the world to me. And you mean the world to me, too."
-
Bryan smiled back at her and nodded. "You're my world. Wherever you go, I'll follow. Just say the word and I'll come."
Kent got into the car with his parents. He went back to fiddling with his zipper. 1134678... His school ID. It was no more. -
Jess smiled, and kissed Bryan on the cheek. "I should get out to my family. Love you," she said, hugging him.
-
He hugged her back and caressed her cheek gently. "I love you, too." He watched her walk out of the school and enter her parents' car. It'll be okay. Everything'll be okay.
Kent looked up as Jess opened the door and climbed into the car. -
"Hey, buddy," Jess said as she sat down next to Kent in the car. "How are you feeling?"
