Kent shrugged, putting down the zipper. "113678... Not anymore," he murmured, processing the situation.
-
Jess ruffled Kent's hair. "It's okay, buddy. We'll find you some new numbers to remember. Better numbers."
-
Kent nodded. "Okay." They pulled into the driveway of their house.
-
Jess climbed out of the car, and held the door open for Kent.
-
Kent climbed out of the car and walked inside. He picked up the plastic container that held his fish, Sammy.
-
Jess walked inside to her room. She sat on her bed, and turned on the radio.
-
Kent sat down at the kitchen table and watched Sammy swim around. He loved his fish with all of his heart. He took him everywhere he went, except for school. He'd tried to once... But the bullies nearly killed him. Kent hummed a song to himself as he watched Sammy slosh around in her home.
"We'll get Sammy his own tank soon, Kent," his mother said, placing a hand on his shoulder. -

Jess grabbed her journal and started writing about how stupid she thought it was that they made Kent leave the school. Sure, it was to protect him, but the school was rejecting him. As if he hadn't faced enough rejection.
-
Kent nodded. "Tank for Sammy. Soon," he repeated back, to make sure he got all of his mom's points.
His parents smiled. "Good job, son."
Kent got up from his seat and walked down the hall to Jess's room. He slowly pushed open the door and stood in the doorway for a moment, wondering if she wanted him to come in. -
Jess smiled when she saw Kent in the doorway. "Come on in, buddy," she said, putting her journal away.
-
Kent walked into Jess' room, holding Sammy with both hands. "Sammy says hi," he said softly, sitting down next to her.
-
Jess smiled. "Hi, Sammy!" she said, waving to the fish.
-
Kent grinned. "Sammy likes you."
Kent's parents stood in the kitchen, discussing possible school transfers.
"Our best bet is Vermont. They have a school there free of tuition that welcomes kids with special needs and normal ones as well. We could kill two birds with one stone having Kent and Jess go there," their father said.
Mrs. Baker nodded in approval. "I agree. We can drive down to the real estate office tonight to pick up some papers. We'll have to move." -
"I like Sammy, too," Jess said. "Do you want a snack, buddy? I'm getting hungry."
