Detective Rogers pressed record on his tape recorder. "Jessica, can you tell me exactly what happened tonight? Start where you see fit."
Kent's eyes didn't leave his hands. They were clean, but he could still feel the blood there, a ghost of the past lingering on his skin. -
Jess told Detective Rogers exactly what had happened that day, starting from when she had found Kent being bullied at school, to when Kent walked in with the gun, and what she had done with it.
-
"Can you show me where the gun is now, Jessica?"
Bryan stood in the corner of the room, watching with eyes heavy with sadness.
Kent picked up a toy robot, examining its features. Anything to distract him from reality... -
Jess nodded and led the detective to the back yard, and pointed to the pile of dirt that marked where she had buried the box with Kent's bloody clothes and the gun.
-
The detective dug up the earth until he could take out the gun and clothing, putting on gloves beforehand as to not leave prints. He paused and handed the evidence to his partner, who sealed it away in a plastic bag. "Now, where's your brother? We'd like to ask him some questions."
-
"One second, I'll go get him," Jess said, sighing. She walked to Kent's room and opened the door. "Buddy... the detective wants to walk to you, okay?"
-
Kent stood up and opened the door. He stared ahead for a few seconds before following her to the living room.
-
Jess looked at the detective. "Is it okay if I come with you while you talk to him?"
-
Detective Rogers nodded. Kent looked at them all, his mouth clamped shut.
-
Jess smiled at Kent sympathetically. "Come on, buddy. We just have to answer a few questions for the detective.
-
Kent stared blankly back at Jess.
"Kent, how were your parents killed?" The detective received no answer. -
Jess looked at Kent pleadingly. "Come on, buddy, at least say something."
-
Kent remained silent, tears pricking his eyes.
-
Jess smiled sympathetically at Kent. "Please, buddy. Try."
-
Kent scowled, a word so close to forming. He sighed in frustration.
