"they are, but Mrs Robinson lets us use calculators for the small things. It's much easier not doing long division without a calculator." Octavia said.
-
“I don’t have one, at least one that works,” Adrienne said, hugging a leg to their chest as they continued to work.
-
"hold on a moment." Octavia said reaching into her bag. She brought out a pink calculator. "I could loan you this one. I don't need it because I have a graphing calculator. I could also do my equations on my head." Octavia said.
-
Adrienne stared at the calculator for a moment before nodding, taking it. “Thanks,” they replied quietly, going back to their work.
-
"you're welcome." Octavia said. She looked at some of the other worksheets. Math probably had the most papers. The teacher liked to assign homework just about everyday.
-
Adrienne tapped their foot against the floor as they scribbled something on the paper, scratching it out with annoyance. They picked up the calculator and punched in a problem, writing more onto the paper.
-
Octavia watched Adrienne solve the problem and realized the one above it was wrong. It was negative instead of positive.
-
Adrienne rolled their eyes at the paper and skipped the question, going to the next one and attempting to solve it. They groaned softly as they scribbled out more writing, gripping their pencil tightly. “This is already pissing me off- Why can I not focus, God damnit??” They set down the calculator and pencil, groaning softly and rubbing their face.
-
"maybe you need some sort of external motivator or something to add extra focus. I could probably put on some music as long as it's quiet. Oh, if you can finish 5 worksheets I'll give you five dollars. This is not very sustainable though, especially for me." Octavia started to ramble.
-
“Music- Yeah, I need music,” Adrienne said, pulling out their phone and a pair of headphones. They slid the headphones on their head and put on some music, going back to their work.
-
Octavia nodded and looked at the worksheets. It was around 78 pages of homework. Octavia started sorting them into the four subjects then into subsections. She took some spare folders out of her bag and started to put them into folders.
-
Adrienne hummed softly as they went through the questions, the music seeming to help them get through them faster. They switched between writing and using the calculator, working out each problem.
-
Octavia watched. She'd tell Adrienne later about the problem she got wrong and in the meantime she started putting the most important worksheets in the brads of the folders.
-
Adrienne soon finished off the first worksheet and set their pencil down, sighing. “One down, a bajillion left to finish,” they said with a sigh, pulling their headphones off. They grabbed the paper and handed it to Octavia, sliding it in front of her. “Can you check this one for me? I think I got most of them right, but I may have f---ed up a few.”
-
"I actually noticed you got this one wrong. It's actually supposed to be a positive number." Octavia said circling number 3. "It's a simple mistake. You might've forgotten to write a negative somewhere in the equation. Oh, also I sorted the work." Octavia said.
