"it's only what any human I've ever met has done. You trusted him after you knew that he is a thief. Curse me for ever trusting another human. It turns out your kind never changes. I'd have guessed after a decade you would. Nothing ever changes does it." Jack said bitterly. He trusted humans before and like before they disappointed him.
-
‘That’s not what he told me!’ Mildred exclaimed, growing upset and frustrated. ‘You really think I would’ve showed you the sunrise if I didn’t care about you? You think I’d still be here and not tried to escape again if I didn’t respect you? I’d shut myself in my room all day and refuse to even look at you if I hated you! I get what I did was wrong, but I also knew better than to help him get your OTHER eye!’
-
"for all I know you could've just devised a plan to watch me burn. Riddle me this, when did you meet with Frederick? How many times did you meet with him?" Jack questioned. He would admit it made sense but he knew better than to be fooled again. No one has ever escaped the city without the permission of the undead. As he saw it, she could have done all of it to stab him in the back someday. She probably read about the eye's greatest ability. The one that humans had always wished for. Humans wasted years searching for the very power the eye could grant.
-
'Only a few times, and that was when I wanted to go to the library. He's a horrible person and you know that!' Mildred said, voice raising to almost a desperate shout. 'I met him maybe a week ago, a couple days after I arrived. Why would I trust you so much if I was planning to betray you, hm? Why would I tell you so much about myself and my family if I wanted you to die at my hand?'
-
"why would it matter what you did and didn't tell me if you knew I'd be dead. It would make a lot of sense... But then again. I have information over you. You slandered a human king with me. If you betray me, I'll make sure that information goes right back to your human king.... Wait. What am I thinking. If you get the power of my eye, it won't matter what I tell him. Here's a deal. You will be moving to the dungeon. In three days time you can convince me you're not a traitor....... Unless." Jack said. He almost sounded mad by his rambling.
-
Mildred stared at him in disbelief. 'Seriously? You're seriously going to punish me before even thinking about imprisoning Frederick? I can't believe you, Jack! I can't win, can I?! I didn't know what to do! I was scared! Scared of you and Frederick and everybody in this goddamned castle!'
-
"then tell me where he is." Jack said sternly. His eye glowed as the flames extinguished one by one. There was only one way to clear Mildred's name. Jack would only accept one way. The capture and subsequent execution of Frederick Bavlenca.
-
'I already did. In the ceilings somewhere, in the library,' Mildred said, voice quivering. She knew he was going to punish her if he found out. It was what she was scared of. The power he had on her.
-
"guards! Search the library ceilings! Burn the rafters if you have to but protect the books!" Jack shouted. The vampires in armor scampered like rats towards the library.
-
Mildred watched them leave, then looked back at Jack. 'He might've already left,' she said quietly. 'He said he'd leave if I didn't accept his deal. And I wasn't going to, by the way.'
-
"did you give him an answer already?" Jack asked. The candles gradually reignited. Jack waited for the answer anxiously.
-
Mildred shook her head. 'I didn't want to see him,' she said. She looked up at him, desperation in her eyes. 'You really don't think I'd try and kill you, right? It would benefit me in no way. I care about you, Jack.' Tears welled in her eyes. 'Please believe me.'
-
Jack turned away as the flames restored themselves. "If you betray me, after I forgive you, I'll walk right out into the sun. You could grab my eye then and claim your wretched immortality. If you do that, know that you would be just as evil as the undead. And once I die, the vampires would not spare your human towns, so don't make me regret trusting another human Mildred. For the betterment of the world don't break my trust." Jack said.
-
Mildred looked down at her shoes, fiddling with her hands. 'Jack, you know I would never,' she said quietly. 'I'm sorry for not telling you sooner, b-but...' her voice faltered as tears streamed down her cheeks. 'I-I thought I was doing the right thing.'
-
"by not telling me about Frederick? By scaring me with the thought of yet another betrayal? By almost permanently blacklisting humanity in my eyes? How was it the right thing, Please explain." Jack said as he sat back down.
