‘What’s your understanding of being alive?’ Mildred asked curiously.
-
"well, if I am aware of my existence, and I breathe, and talk, and see, how could I not be alive?" Jack said. He had no other way to describe his thoughts on the matter. It was difficult for him to explain life. He remembered Frederick talking often about how life was a pain.
-
‘That’s true,’ Mildred said, nodding. ‘And you never technically died, so…’ She trailed off thoughtfully.
-
"there is also the fact that we vampires are not so different mentally than you humans. We feel joy and pain, anger and jealousy, hope and hopelessness. The difference is our physiology." Jack said.
-
‘Physiology?’ Mildred asked, cocking her head. ‘Is that like bodily function or something?’
-
"yes, there's psychology which is the mind's workings and physiology which is the body." Jack said. He had read about it in an old book he had in the library. It was a very tedious and repetitive book in his mind but it taught him a fair bit about the reasoning behind some actions.
-
‘Right. Because vampires have the fangs and the blood diet and stuff,’ Mildred said. She tried not to think about the fact that she practically was a vampire’s diet.
-
"yes. In any case, I am as alive as you are. The way I like to see it is that we vampires are simply a different species, an evolution of sorts." Jack said
-
‘Yeah, that makes sense,’ Mildred said, nodding. ‘But, if that’s the case, why are vampires classified as undead creatures?’ Mildred paused. ‘And is it true that vampires have no reflection?’
-
"I suppose it's ignorance. Similar to how they think a cross will drive us away. As for reflections, I have seen my reflection in the water once, but it was ghastly." Jack said
-
Mildred thought about that for a moment. ‘The cross is very sacred for some people,’ she said. ‘The Lord is very important to them. They don’t exactly understand the undead business, I guess. And I’m sure you didn’t look that bad.’ She assumed that’s what he meant by ghastly. And she thought he was fairly good looking.
-
"I look atrocious, paper skin, knives coming out of my mouth and of course there's the huge hole in my face. Really, I couldn't stand looking at myself for any longer than a few minutes. I'm terrifying." Jack said
-
‘Oh, don’t be ridiculous,’ Mildred said. ‘You look absolutely fine.’ She looked him up at down. Her cheeks tinged a light red as she glanced back at his face. ‘Everyone thinks that about themselves.’
-
"most vampires agree that we look atrocious. I must also add the bag wings for ears and lack of pupils in any vampire reflection makes most of us discard reflective surfaces. We have all agreed not to gaze upon our own faces out of fear and disgust." Jack said
-
‘Still,’ Mildred said. ‘But you don’t have bat wings for ears. And I’m pretty sure you have a pupil, but I can’t really see from here.’ She smiled gently. ‘You look great, Jack. You vampires must have problems with self-esteem.’
