Mildred shrugged. ‘My dad used to say something similar. He used to write novels when he wasn’t at the mines, but never got to publish them. I read a few pages one day, and it was actually really good. By a teenager’s standard, anyway.’
-
"I'm telling you they're the worst poems ever written. I'm pretty sure I misspelled poem on those poems." Jack said. The informality of the statement sent him reeling. He held onto his eye patch.
-
Mildred sighed. ‘If you say so,’ she said, deciding not to press him any more.
-
"in any case, now that that's out of the way, have you found any good books within my library?" Jack questioned. He knew every book in the library.
-
Mildred smiled. ‘Yes, multiple. This one called Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens I think. I couldn’t find anymore by him, but there’s another one with a name I can’t pronounce. Seerendiepitee, I think?’
-
"Charles Dickens is fairly popular, serendipity is a classic." Jack said. He read the stories of Charles Dickens as a young vampire and never read them again
-
‘Do you like them?’ Mildred asked. ‘My standard for books is fairly low I suppose, since I so scarcely possessed them.’
-
"i find them to be a fine way to pass the time, but I have found myself focused on much darker and or more whimsical books." Jack said. He remembered a series of books he'd read and reread for a century before his brother his them to stop his obsession
-
‘Do you have any you could recommend?’ Mildred asked.
-
"there is one book series I must recommend. It is called the wizard of Oz and it's about a magical land where strange things often happen." Jack said. He read the books so many times he could recite all 7 of the volumes.
-
Mildred nodded. ‘I’ll be sure to look for it later,’ she said with a smile. ‘But for now, I have a question to ask you. It’s very unrelated to books.’
-
"hmm?" Jack articulated. He wondered what Mildred wanted to talk about.
-
‘Would I be able to go back to the human town?’ Mildred asked. ‘I mean, not that I wish to anytime soon. I just have some… unfinished business to attend to for the future.’ She paused. ‘I suppose I’m just wondering if my time here is temporary or permanent.’
-
"well... It's difficult to say really. I feel that you are trustworthy Mildred, but even just a paper cut can get one to confess. If the human king found out you returned and tried to find out where you went, my kingdom would be in danger." Jack said.
-
Mildred sighed. ‘That’s true,’ she mumbled, having not thought of that. It felt strange having been torn away from a land so familiar in a matter of hours, both against her will and without her knowledge. She enjoyed it in Jack’s kingdom, but she still thought as the human town as her home, however mistreated she was. ‘I suppose I’m staying here for the time being, huh?’ she said with a weak smile.
