"I apologize for that, but no matter how much I trust and even enjoy your company I cannot endanger my kingdom. I also imagine torture is not in your best interests." Jack said
-
‘I get it. And no, it’s not, so it’s probably for the best I stay here,’ Mildred responded. She looked to the other side of the throne room, watching some of the servants set up decorations, mainly just to avoid his gaze.
-
"in any case, I believe the party will have excellent food! Vampires might not often eat food but the spectacle of taste is still something we experience. Everyone will at least eat one snack at the party for the sake of being polite." Jack said
-
Mildred glanced back at him. ‘You don’t need to eat?’ she questioned, quite taken aback. ‘I guess I should’ve anticipated that, but still!’
-
"we cannot obtain nutrients from food and instead obtain it from blood. Food is still by far appreciated." Jack said. He remembered bugging the kitchen for sugar cubes as a child so that he could eat them.
-
‘Interesting,’ Mildred said. ‘Aren’t vampires undead creatures or something? Do you even have a heartbeat!’
-
"i find that term strange. We call ourselves undead but if I'm undead I have never once been alive. I was born a vampire." Jack said. He couldn't think of a day before his sunburn where he'd ever seen the true extent of the sun.
-
Mildred thought about that for a moment. ‘That’s a good point,’ she mused. She reached over and grabbed his hand, then put her forefinger and middle finger on his wrist, looking for a pulse.
-
Jack watched curiously. The first thing of note was how cold his wrist was. The pulse that could be felt was not like a human pulse, Jack's pulse was like a cold wind rushing through his veins.
-
‘Woah,’ Mildred muttered, feeling how cold his hand was. She rested her fingers on his wrist, looking for the pulse. ‘Interesting,’ she mused once she felt it. It didn’t feel like a normal pulse. ‘I don’t think dead things are suppose to have pulses.’
-
"well, I'm not dead." Jack said. He never believed in the notion that he was ever dead. He remembered Frederick mentioning his undead status as strange
-
‘Exactly. If you were dead you wouldn’t have a pulse,’ Mildred said as she let of of his arm and sat back down. She cocked her head at him. ‘Are you absolutely sure you’re not alive?’ she asked, struggling to understand.
-
"I'm undead, as all vampires are. Undead does not mean dead." Jack said. He remembered Frederick had told him that first. Jack felt himself on the brink of falling into old memories.
-
‘That’s true. I always thought undead meant alive, because of the prefix ‘un’, but I suppose I was wrong,’ Mildred said.
-
"I've learned it all comes down to one's understanding of being alive." Jack said. He always thought of himself as an undead but that would never make him a dead man despite what some may argue.
