"our reflections show our beastly nature. The more you embrace your vampirism the more your reflection changes." Jack said as he gazed out the window
-
Mildred followed his gaze. She found nothing fascinating about the window so she turned her attention back to Jack. ‘What does that mean?’ she asked, brows furrowing slightly. ‘You don’t seem beastly to me.’
The only time she’d really been scared of him was when he’d found her, after she’d tried to escape. The way he’d looked down at her from his mare terrified her even now. -
"the more humans we hunt the scarier our reflections get. Drinking blood is beastly enough don't you think?" Jack said. Vampires were bloodsucking beasts as per all descriptions. Jack has always remembered that
-
Mildred shrugged. ‘I mean, it’s scary, but it’s a way of life. You can’t survive without blood, the same way humans can’t survive without the meat of animals. It’s beastly if you look at it one way, but it’s normal,’ she said, cocking her head curiously at him. ‘Something about food chains.’
-
"the world deems it beastly and so it must be. That is how it works after all." Jack says. He closes his eye and leans back into his chair
-
‘Well, maybe it shouldn’t be deemed beastly,’ Mildred said, saying the last part in a posh British accent. ‘But anyway. I don’t know how we always end up talking about politics.’
-
"it's not politics. It's a nature of humanistics and morality. It's deemed immoral and foul to be undead because our forefathers already used their lives. It is different for everyone though." Jack said. He had thought about the nature of blood drinking and being undead for most of his life. After all, vampire babies were born without a heartbeat. The only way one's parents knew they were alive was if their eyes opened.
-
'I mean, if you didn't drink blood you would die, and so would the rest of the vampiric population. You can't just not,' Mildred said, folding her arms across her chest.
-
"I know. It's quite foolish from a logistical standpoint but logic isn't enough for some lifeforms. Many just don't want to accept undead as moral in any capacity. It's really quite annoying." Jack said.
-
Mildred nodded thoughtfully. ‘I can imagine.’ She fidgeted with her skirt and stood up, getting cramps in her legs from the stool. ‘So, uh, what should we talk about now?’
-
"hmm, well, I suppose we could talk about books. Weren't you reading the journey of the sea prince?" Jack asked. He had remembered the book filled with scribbles. It was one he had liked to read often in his 80's.
-
‘Ooh, yes, let’s talk about that,’ Mildred nodded, smiling.
-
"what was your favorite part? It has been some time since I read it but I enjoyed the writer's description of the underwater palace. Even in ruin it was written so beautifully." Jack said. It reminded him of his brother's description of the kingdom during the day
-
‘I’m not sure,’ Mildred admitted. ‘I only got halfway through before Fre- someone drew all over it. ‘Maybe the part where the pirate’s ship was turned upside down. That was kind of funny.’
-
"oh, the best part was just coming up. Luckily the ink should be sucked up by now and you may continue reading. I was quite fond of that book in my youth." Jack said. He remembered how often he'd forced Alexander to read it to him.
