"it's his lies. Frederick says things that get into your head. He makes these outlandish ideas seem reasonable. Truly, if you took my eye how would you get it to your loved ones anyways. I do not mean to upset you with this comment but they were burned to a crisp." Jack said.

Mildred nodded, fiddling with her hands as she avoided his gaze. 'I know that. But, I couldn't help hoping...'

"as I said, Frederick is a charismatic and tricky man. He can make you believe the impossible because you want to believe it." Jack said

Mildred nodded. She looked up at him. 'I just thought you should know.'

"I'm glad you told me. Now you won't think of taking my eye for any sort of reason." Jack said. He was tired of fighting with humanity over his own eyeballs.

Mildred smiled weakly, rubbing her arm. ‘Yeah.’

"honestly, I wish I could take a break from the burden that these eyes give me. It's hard enough being a prince that has to rule in the absence of the king but being targeted for my eyes makes it worse." Jack said

Mildred nodded. ‘I can imagine that. But at least not many people know about it. Heck, I didn’t even know vampires existed before I met you.’

"and I'd prefer to keep my kingdom quote on quote undiscovered. If the human kingdoms found out about us they'd attempt to wipe us out." Jack said

'That's probably for the best,' Mildred agreed. 'It wouldn't work out too well.'

"it would end in bloodshed no matter how you spin it. In the day the humans would raid the houses of my citizens and nosfera would rain a relentless attack on the soldiers. They would be hounded by zombies in the day and at night the rest of my citizens would attack. There is no way that either of us would win as the human king would just keep throwing his men to my kingdom like meat shields." Jack said.

Mildred fiddled with the charm of her necklace, nodding slowly. 'Most of both populations would die,' she murmured. 'As well as others.'

"yes, the faefolk of the winter court would most likely join vampiric aid and the human mages would no doubt be enlisted. They would also probably bring out some beasts." Jack said.

Mildred nodded. 'All that, just because a couple humans found out about your kingdom?'

"all that because someone gets the information to the human king." Jack corrected. No one had ever been able to meet the kings of both kingdoms.
