"it would be, but I don't like the idea of my people dying of poisonous gases, explosions, cave-ins and beastfolk." Jack said. He remembered a group of ghouls that offered to mine for the kingdom as long as they were allowed to keep the gold. All of the ghouls were torn apart by a reptilian figure.
-
‘Fair enough. Wait, did you say beastfolk?’ Mildred asked, looking up at him with a slightly bewildered expression. ‘Actually, I’m not even going to ask.’
-
"it's best you don't. In any case our panning system is primitive but it works well. We have even found quite a bit of gold. We don't have much use for it so we have been using it to teach perceived values in school." Jack said.
-
‘Not much use? For gold?’ Mildred asked, the surprise evident on her face. ‘Does it not have value in your kingdom or something?’
-
"well, it's pretty, but we have no need of it. Iron is far more valuable to us. Gold is sometimes used by our blacksmith for kitchen utensils but it just doesn't have the same structural integrity as iron." Jack said.
-
‘I suppose that’s… practical. But it’s insanely valuable, and one chunk could be millions in human dollars,’ Mildred said. ‘I mean, I get why it’s not the go-to material, but still!’
-
"it's part of perceived value. You see gold as something important because trading it could get you food, clothes, shelter, or luxury products." Jack said.
-
‘I suppose so. But I grew up with food being the most out-of-reach thing to get, so you can’t blame me,’ Mildred said, folding her arms across her chest. ‘If gold isn’t valuable here, what is?’
-
"we put our value into rabbits and cows. Nobles have many farms for these animals to quench our thirsts. We also have value in wax and gasoline for candles. Sulfur is very valuable." Jack said
-
‘Right, that would make sense. Vampires and the blood of farm animals…’ Mildred mumbled the last part, only being partially sarcastic. ‘Why wax? I didn’t think that was hard to obtain.’
-
"well, wax comes from bee hives, and bee hives and bees take time. It's difficult to get a lot of wax quickly." Jack said. The most they could do was collect bees.
-
‘That’s true,’ Mildred said, nodding. She didn’t have anything else to add to the conversation, so she kept quiet. Talking with Jack so much had shown her that her suspicions were correct - she was not at all an interesting person.
-
"iron is probably the rarest thing we put value into." Jack said.
-
Mildred nodded again. ‘Makes sense, I suppose. In some way or another,’ she said, looking outside. ‘When’s dinner again?’
-
"we could probably go eat now. Wilhelm has probably rushed the meal anyways to make more time for party preparations." Jack said.
