'Well, I swear on my life that won't be me,' Mildred said, looking up at him. 'I could never be the cause of something so horrible.'
-
"well of course. I didn't expect you too. You have no love for the human king, you know the devastation and you couldn't find your way out of this kingdom without any help." Jack said
-
Mildred nodded. 'That's fair enough. I don't think I could even survive in your kingdom to be honest. Not because I can't live in my own, your citizens would bleed me dry before 24 hours.'
-
"yes. No offense, but you'd be a prime steak in their eyes. Fresh human blood is a luxury good." Jack said. He remembered the taste of human blood which started to make him thirsty.
-
'I'm surprised I even survived a night,' Mildred said with a nervous laugh. 'Erm, while we're on this topic, are you sure people aren't going to eat me alive at the ball?' She rubbed the back of her neck nervously. 'Just checking.'
-
"I'm sure they won't. No matter how it goes you're a guest at a royal ball so they're stuck with hospitality rules. However, if you're still worried I could loan you an angelite necklace. We might not be weak to crosses in any way but angelite has a sort of special property that no one has been able to place. A vampire cannot physically harm a person wearing angelite." Jack said.
-
Mildred nodded. 'Yeah, that'd definitely make me feel safer,' she said, running her fingers through a knot in her hair. 'Thank you.'
-
"it is no problem. I shall bring you the angelite tomorrow. We might not have mines here but we do pan the rivers for minerals." Jack said.
-
Mildred nodded. ‘That makes sense,’ she said, rubbing the back of her neck, not sure what else to say.
-
"since we can't get too close to running water, we actually have a whole mechanism for panning." Jack said
-
‘Really? How does that work?’ Mildred asked.
-
"well, first we weaved together dried willow branches to form a net, then we tied ropes to them and lowered them into the water. We then set up a pulley system which allows us to scoop the net up to reveal whatever we've caught. We've almost collected enough iron to make a metal netting. We've contemplated adding a bucket but we'd have to make a trench in the river bed to fit the bucket." Jack said
-
Mildred nodded, listening intently to what he was saying. ‘That’s pretty cool. But wouldn’t it be easier to use mines?’
-
"are you suggesting I sacrifice my people to the earth?" Jack said in a semi accusatory tone. He never liked mines.
-
‘Well, uh…’ Mildred said, rubbing the back of her neck. ‘No… But wouldn’t it be easier?’
