"you're supposed to tell him you're name." Jack said as he looked eagerly at the glass coffin. He carefully opened the lid which made Alexander flinch in his sleep. It made jack jamp.
-
'Oh,' Mildred said with an embarrassed laugh. 'My name's Mildred Emerson,' she told Alexander. It felt strange talking to someone in what seemed like a coma or something of the sorts.
-
"good job Mildred..." Jack stared at Alexander. Alexander barely moved except for his heavy breathing. "You don't have to be shy now Alexander... Just get up. Won't it be refreshing to move your arms and legs again. Don't you want to wake up..." Jack's cheerful expression slowly faded. Alexander did not stir from his sleep again.
-
Mildred watched Alexander sadly. She looked up the Jack. Alexander was not her brother, but if she imagined he was Albert she imagined she felt only a fraction of sadness that Jack must've been.
'Hey, you alright?' Mildred asked softly. -
Jack sighed. He felt like crying but he kept his composure. "It doesn't matter. He'll never wake up." Jack said dejectedly. His voice slightly waived. He sat down in front of the coffin.
-
Mildred sat down next to him. She watched Alexander, trying to will him to wake up. But of course it didn't work, so she looked at Jack. 'You shouldn't spend all this time brooding about it. I get he's your brother, but-' she looked over at the coffin again, 'You need to move on. Otherwise you'll be miserable for the rest of your life and you won't even try to find someone else who'll make you happy.'
-
"I TRIED!" Jack shouted angrily. The words felt so insulting. "I WAS HAPPY FOR AWHILE BUT OH NO THE UNIVERSE CAN'T HANDLE THAT! I HAD FREDERICK? HE LEFT ME! I TRIED TO MAKE FRIENDS AND THEY IGNORED ME FOR MY STATUS OR MY RACE! Even you didn't want to be my friend at first. I'm not even sure if you do want to be my friend or if you're just pretending." Jack said. He wore a look of anger, sorrow, and hatred. He tried for so long to feel happy and move on but Alexander wasn't even dead so there was hope. He didn't even spend that long brooding over the man who wasn't only his brother but also his father figure and only friend for years. He felt betrayed by that simple statement.
-
Mildred flinched a little. She sighed. She cuddled her knees to her chest and watched Alexander, resting her chin on her knees. She waited a bit before speaking. 'I was like that too, y'know. I still am. When my family died, I had nobody. Nobody. And I had nothing. At least you have a second chance, a third. Maybe even a forth. People I didn't even know we're constantly trying to get people like me killed.' She glanced at Jack. 'I do want to be your friend. I haven't had one for years. But I think I've forgotten how to be one. I'm sorry.'
-
Jack sighed. "I'm sorry for blowing up at you Mildred." He said as he stood up. He dusted off his coat and extended his hand to Mildred. "The dungeons are cold and musty, it would be better for your health if we went back to the ground floor, friend." Jack said.
-
Mildred smiled. 'It's fine,' she said, reaching up and taking his hand.
-
Sorry I haven't responded in so long, I was sick))
Jack pulled Mildred to her feet. "For the record," Jack said with attitude, "it's possible I'll never really 'move on' from it but the way I approach it will change. That's the truth about the loss. Also my brother still really has the possibility to wake up so it's different. It's the chance that makes it a difficult case." Jack said. It was true after all. Mildred's family was dead and Jack's family was comatose. -
(all good!)
Mildred glanced back at the coffin. She watched as Alexander's chest rose and fell. Rose and fell. 'At least he has hope,' she said, in a seeming sad tone of voice. She sighed and looked back at Jack. 'I understand that. I don't know how it feels, to still have that hope, but I get it.' -
"I may be 5,000 years old when he wakes up. Your situation is much sadder. I wish I could have helped your family." Jack said. He was always wishing he could change the cruelty of the world. His reach was not nearly that big and he was certainly not that naive. He could change the cruelty in his own kingdom though.
-
Mildred shrugged and forced a small smile. 'It was a long time ago, I really shouldn't still be mourning. Thanks, though,' she said.
-
"you should mourn for as long as you need. The way I see it you hardly had time to mourn. You had to survive instead." Jack said. Mourning was a difficult process. Whenever Wilhelm's wife was caught in a sunrise he left the castle for 50 years. He knew it was very difficult
