Mildred thought about that for a moment. 'Yes, I suppose you are right,' she said. She remembered the last thing she saw of her family - her brother's face. It was full of terror and pain. She felt a pang in her stomach. She said nothing more, just glanced at the ground.
-
Jack quietly started going up the stairs. The air was stale and stiff the further into the dungeon you were, and Alexander's room was the stillest. Each time he was down there he stopped breathing for a few minutes. He had a similar habit of turning off all lights for a few minutes whenever he went into any caves.
-
Mildred followed, equally as silent. She thought back to her parents for a moment, then pushed them out of her mind. It was painful to think of them. She let herself think of them so rarely she'd nearly forgotten their names. She'd realise this with dismay and search her mind for the names of her parents, then she would remember them and breathe a sigh of relief. This often happened every few weeks. Mildred feared the day she might forget her family.
Mildred looked up at Jack. 'Is it OK if I start calling you Jack?' she asked. -
"in private sure, but servants might get pressed if they hear you referring to me so casually." Jack said. He ducked under a chain that hung from the ceiling. He had once ran right into it when he was 1600 and remembered being embarrassed by it for years.
-
Mildred nodded. 'Alright, then,' she said, rather happily. For her it was a sense of trust between them, however slightly unreasonable it was. She bumped into the chain, winced in embarrassment, then hurried to catch up with Jack.
-
"to be fair, you've seen me shape shift, and you've seen Alexander." Jack said. He quickly walked past an occupied prison cells and the end of the stairs drew near
-
'And your servants haven't?' Mildred asked. She thought a much-loved prince would be close with his staff. She jumped away from a prisoner trying to grab onto her skirt.
-
"shape shifting is a very private affair usually only done in front of family. It is an expression of upmost joy. We don't tend to share such joys in public. It is akin to humans crying in public." Jack said. He opened the door to the ground floor.
-
'Ah. Right,' Mildred said. The thought of a man breaking into tears at the sight of someone turn into a bat gave her an amused smile.
-
"it's not often we shape shift in sorrow, but when we do some people are known to self exile. It's the worst kind of tragedy usually." Jack said. He'd thought of someone he knew who left. He remembered one maid leaving when he was younger.
-
'That's sad,' Mildred said.
-
"yes, I suppose it is." Jack said. He thought of all the times he'd shape shifted. He didn't usually like how it felt unless he was happy.
-
'Have you ever shifted in sorrow?' Mildred asked curiously.
-
"there were times I should have, but I was much too full of rage. Strong emotions overwhelm each other in ways you can only imagine." Jack said. A prisoner from the depths screamed out.
-
Mildred thought about that for a moment. She didn’t respond, and instead wrapped her arms around her. It wasn’t that cold, though. She flinched when the prisoner screamed out.
