'Hello, Prince,' Mildred said, not in an upbeat tone as she still clutched the book in her hand. She took a few steps inside, till she was in front of Jack.
-
"is something wrong Mildred?" Jack asked looking up. He was glad she was here so he could tell her about the party he'd be attending later in the evening. He remembered how much he wished he could take Frederick to parties. He never got Frederick accepted in the noble circle so he never quite got there.
-
'Do you know who did this?' Mildred asked, holding up the book indignantly. She flipped to the page and showed him the scribbles on the page. 'Someone took the book off me and drew on it while I was asleep!'
-
"I.... that's impossible...." jack said as he took the book from Mildred's hands in disbelief. "This drawings are definitely familiar but there's no way they could be in this book. He didn't even like books." Jack mumbled to himself holding the book. He'd seen these drawings almost a hundred times, there was no way they'd be in his library in a book they were not seen in before. He'd angrily thrown all the drawn on books away.
-
'It's a horrible trick,' Mildred said angrily. 'Is there a way to erase it?' She didn't care who "he" was right now. She could always ask later, and right now she was more concerned about the book.
-
"I.... I can't." Jack said closing his eye. He held out the book covering his eye. "Take it away." He demanded. He didn't want to see those drawings but he couldn't bare the thought of erasing them. He knew how but no matter what he felt like it was impossible. He couldn't even bring himself to touch the pictures in case he smudged them. He rubbed his injured throat uncomfortably.
-
Mildred took the book. 'Fine. I'll erase them,' she stated, closing the book. 'Do you know how to?' Mildred gasped in horror. 'And what happened to your throat?!'
-
"I do know how to erase that ink, luckily it's a separate type from the writing on the book. As for my throat, I got thirsty and stayed up all day. We vampires tend to get a little manic when we're thirsty. It's often called bloodlust and it will cause us to harm any living thing in the vicinity until we sleep or drink blood." Jack explained. He rubbed the injury a little more. He used to be physically restrained whenever he went into bloodlust until someone could get him something to drink.
-
'Oh,' Mildred said, noting not to disturb him during the day. 'I do hope it heals all right.' She looked back to the book, frowning at the drawing. 'Can you teach me how to erase it? It was such a good read.'
-
"all it requires is a lion's mane mushroom. The mycelium soaks up that specific type of ink very well. On a separate note I will be leaving the palace at high noon to go to a party. I will be asking my butler Cain to follow you while I'm gone as I do not trust my guards not to attack if they believe I'm gone." Jack said. His guards had a history of attacking while he was away.
-
'Alright,' Mildred said, the idea of being attacked making her nervous around the guards. 'Cain can show me where the mushrooms are later, I suppose. Can I chat with you in the meantime?'
-
"of course you can. I've been bored out of my mind doing all of this paperwork. It's all just reports on how each citizen is doing for the most part." Jack said. Paperwork was always boring but someone being around made it more barrable. People in his kingdom hadn't had a bad day since Alexander became king.
-
Mildred smiled and pulled over the stool so that she sat in front of Jack, her anger about the book fading. She set the book on the ground and looked back at Jack. 'What do you wish to talk about?' she asked him.
-
"well, what do you kings do in your human towns?" Jack asked. He'd heard that kings didn't do paperwork like he did. Frederick told him not to ask about the king so he didn't know much about human kings.
-
'I'm not sure, really,' Mildred said. 'I've never seen the king in person, except when he made that public appearance after the war. All the soldiers walked through town with the king behind him being carried on his throne.' She remembered the war. Mildred paused to think before continuing. 'He doesn't turn up when criminals are being sentenced to death. Or when witches are burned.'
