Mildred swallowed. She'd messed up. 'Uhm... W-Well, Frederi- Sorry, his journal is in my room. I read through it. Just a few pages, though!' she said.
-
"I..... I can't particularly fault you for that." Jack said. He put his head in his hands. "I should've taken it out so it's my fault." Jack said. All those bitter memories came flooding back. It felt like the floodgates were unleashed. That journal was something he never dated to touch. He didn't even like entering the room since Frederick left. It felt wrong when no one else was there.
-
Mildred stood next to Jack, rubbing his back in an attempt to comfort him. Her brother had done it when she was upset, and she found that sometimes it helped a little. 'You OK?' Mildred asked, cocking her head to try and look him in the eye. 'I can leave if you prefer to brood in peace.'
-
"I'll tell you more about Frederick. Just give me a minute." Jack said rubbing his face. Frederick was always a touchy subject especially in the earlier four years. Wilhelm couldn't even mention the name without jack storming off
-
Mildred nodded. 'Take your time,' she said softly and sat back down on the stool. She rubbed her index finger against a scabbed over graze on her knee underneath the skirt.
-
"Frederick and me started off almost as enemies when he first came here, at first I kept him alive because his c---iness entertained me." Jack said glancing towards the spot on the carpet where he'd met Frederick. It felt so long ago that he wasn't even sure it was the right spot
-
'What do you mean by that? Like, he was obnoxious or something?' Mildred asked. She remembered how Jack had said she entertained him with her lousy excuses when they'd first met, and wondered if that was a form of "c---iness". Her parents despised swearing, so she'd never heard all that many bad words.
-
I swear c0ckiness is just like arrogance but with extra steps I just didn't know gtq would sensor it lmao))
"He was so sure that his father would not only come to the kingdom of the undead to retrieve him, but that I'd also not even dare drink his blood. He even made bets about it as a joke. He was silly." Jack said. He looked up to the moon through the window. -
(Oh, I thought it said something else LOL)
'That is silly,' Mildred agreed, still rubbing her scab a bit. She looked down at the book in her lap, opened to the page with the drawing. 'What did he do to betray you?' -
Jack contemplated the answer then took off his eye patch. There was no eye there, just an orange ooze where an eye should've been. "He stole my eye. Right in the sunset so he could escape. No one could run after him and I had to watch him run away out into the sun with my left eye." Jack said. He covered the eye socket. It always stung when he remembered the incident
-
Mildred winced, looking away from the empty eye socket squeamishly. 'I don't even want to ask how,' she mumbled. 'Why did he, uhm, take your eye?'
-
"that's a secret. Ever since Frederick everyone in this castle has agreed not to tell anyone why my eye was stolen." Jack said authoritively. Every human who ever found out what even a single part of a royal vampire could do have all caused harm to the Coros bloodline.
-
'Why?' Mildred asked, cocking her head to the side. By now she was more curious than anything else, and didn't realise she was prying.
-
"I am never in my life telling another human why and that's final." Jack said sternly. He stood up. "Now, it's breakfast time. We shouldn't keep Wilhelm waiting." Jack deflected
-
Mildred nodded, standing as well. She picked up the stool and put it back next to the throne, a little disappointed she hadn't really gotten anywhere. Maybe she could continue reading the diary after lunch.
