Jack walked quietly. The talk of the eye had put him in a bad mood as well as thinking about Frederick. His eye was starting to glow from the sheer stress of it all
-
Mildred followed, watching Jack curiously. He looked stressed. She remembered her brother having a similar expression very often after their father died. 'Why'd the chicken cross the road?' she asked, in an attempt to cheer him up.
-
"I don't know." Jack said. He rubbed his eye patch. He had a habit of rubbing his eye patch when he thought too much about his missing eye.
-
'To get to the idiot's house,' Mildred said. The joke was one Albert - her brother - had told her when she was being extra annoying. 'Knock knock?'
-
"why are you saying knock knock?" Jack asked. The phrase sounded familiar but he couldn't remember when he heard it.
-
'It's part of the joke. You have to say "who's there?",' Mildred said with a laugh.
-
"oh, then who's there?" Jack asked with mild interest in the joke. He wasn't told any jokes for awhile.
-
'The chicken,' Mildred said, trying not to laugh herself. She waited for Jack's response with great interest.
-
Jack thought it was stupid... but he couldn't help but laugh in spite of himself. "Now I know why that knock knock set up was so familiar. When I was 500 years old Alexander used to tell me similar stupid jokes." Jack reminisced
-
Mildred smiled when he laughed. 'Anybody with a good sense of humour would,' she said, happy he found it a little funny. 'I've got a few others!'
-
"he told me about a thousand stupid jokes until I decided I was too old for stupid jokes." Jack said. Alexander used to tell him one all the time about apples and oranges.
-
'How old are you?' Mildred asked curiously. She then figured it was rude to ask. 'Sorry. That's a rude question.'
-
"it's not rude. I have lived for approximately 2 thousand years." Jack said. Alexander used to calculate their ages in 100 year intervals with a party which was a custom he'd learned from humans.
-
'Two thousand?!' Mildred exclaimed. 'Why, that's more than one thousand and nine hundred years more than the lifespan of a human!'
-
"yes. We undead can live for much longer than any human. We practically never die." Jack said. He knew there were the injury exceptions but with no injuries and no sun a vampire would essentially live forever.
