'A kobold?' Mildred asked frowning. 'What's a kobold? Some kind of chef?'
-
"well, they don't come to the vampiric kingdoms very often so take what I say with a grain of salt but they're apparently great cooks and servants. It's apparently their job in the fairy lands. They're seelie fae so when they arrive it usually is a pretty big deal unless they came with an unseelie fae like a dullahan or a kelpie." Jack said. He was fond of the unseelie fae he'd met because they were usually very cool. The only dullahan he'd met gave him smokey and the kelpies were adorable horses.
-
Mildred had never heard of a "seelie fae" or an "unseelie fae" or most of the strange words Jack had just said. "I should've presumed there'd be other mythical creatures if vampires are real," she thought to herself, "But there's a whole world I've had no idea about!"
'Cool,' Mildred said, a little dazed and unsure how to respond without seeming stupid. -
"i thought they had legends of fae in your human kingdoms. The kobolds that sneak in and do chores while everyone sleeps, the bogarts who misplace your things, the kelpies who bring you to a water death and the dullahan who is missing his head." Jack said. He'd heard the rhyme from Wilhelm when he was a mere 400 years old.
-
'Not really. At least, I've never heard most of them,' Mildred said. 'I remember my brother using the kobold excuse to get out of doing his chores, but it never worked.'
-
"they don't show up unless you leave out a dish of milk for them and if you stop leaving one for them after they're there they'll turn into bogarts." Jack said. He remembered leaving out portions of milk he was given so the kobolds would show up but they didn't.
-
Mildred nodded, taking a bite out of her crossiant. 'We never did that, I don't think. And anyway, there'd be no chores for them to do because Mother didn't believe in kobolds,' she said with a slight chuckle.
-
"kobolds will always find something to do for the house. That's what Wilhelm told me anyways. He said they used to have a lot of them in the human town he used to live in. He first called them Galgenmännlein." Jack prattled on. He loved the idea of a kobold who would do anything for the house. He imagined since the castle had so many servants the kobold would tuck him in and read bedtime stories.
-
'There were never any such creatures in the town I grew up in. People were scared of them, I think, so didn't allow them to live with us. The only magical beings I ever knew was the mage I told you about earlier,' Mildred said, thinking how interesting it would be having mythical beings living among the humans.
-
"I forgot how much of a coward your human king is." Jack said as he poured a cup of milk. Wilhelm used to scold him for leaving the milk out for kobolds
-
'Has any human ventured into your kingdom? Apart from me and the other ones you kidnap,' Mildred asked, finishing off her crossiant.
-
"occasionally. It's rare though, sometimes they're wandering traders who see it abandoned in the day others are people seeking sanctuary from their cruel human kings. The refugees will undergo the process of vampirism. After they are fully turned we hold a feast to celebrate their new status as a vampire and then they get their jobs. Believe it or not Wilhelm was a refugee once." Jack said.
-
Mildred nodded. 'How do humans get turned to vampires?' she asked. She'd never heard of something get turned into something totally different, except catepillars. She found it very interesting how something close resembling a worm could be turned to something so beautiful.
-
"well, first they must drink the blood of a royal vampire. Then they have to avoid the sun for 10 days then finally they have to kill something. Wilhelm killed a cow from what he told me." Jack said. Wilhelm spoke lots about how fascinating he found human customs to be
-
Mildred didn't like the idea of killing something. She'd once considered it when she came across a farm looking for food, but since she'd become homeless she'd practically gone on a vegetarian diet. She decided she'd stay human for at least little longer.
'And then they'd just become one? Just like that?' Mildred asked.
