'I suppose I can't argue with that. The king does seem like a horrible man. But, mayhaps we talk about something else? I prefer not to relive these memories,' Mildred said.
-
"yes, it is probably better if we change the subject. That being said it seems you need new shoes." Jack said turning his attention to Mildred's torn leather boots. He had seen boots in disrepair but he was sure she needed a new pair all together
-
Mildred looked down at her feet. 'It seems I do,' she said, flicking the broken bit at bottom back at forth.
-
"I could ask celie to loan you some. Now that I think of it, maybe I should introduce you two." Jack said. He figured if they talked they might become friends which would be good for Mildred. He'd heard humans liked having a community which usually meant having a lot of friends
-
'Who's Celie?' Mildred asked, looking up from her shoes.
-
"she's one of the maids here, she loaned you that green dress." Jack said. Celie was one of the maids he'd remembered the names of because she was so happy to talk to him without being in trouble. His subjects were occasionally worried about punishment but they knew it had to be something terrible for him to actually be mad
-
'Oh. She has good taste,' Mildred stated, smoothing down her skirt. It was nice to think of having a potential friend. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had a friend to talk to, other than Jack. Even then, she wasn't too sure if she was just here to entertain the prince of to be his friend.
-
"she's very friendly as far as I can tell, but be forewarned she is an undead. I love my subjects but I know we can be a bit dangerous to humans." Jack said. He had to admit their danger towards humans considering he almost drained Mildred dry when they first met
-
Mildred nodded. 'That's true. I'll have to remember to be careful,' she said. The image of her blood being sucked through a straw crossed her mind, and it send a shudder down her spine.
-
"if anything goes wrong, throwing a cup of water at her will stun her as whenever water spills from a cup it is considered running. We undead cannot cross running water." Jack said. It was one of the reasons his brother didn't try conquest.
-
'Noted. Does it burn vampires like the sun does?' Mildred asked, not being able to think of any reason it would be bad for them.
-
"no, we become physically stunned if we try to pass running water. Our muscles stop functioning." Jack said. It had happened to him before. There was a stream in the garden he was never able to cross until they built a bridge over it.
-
Mildred nodded. 'That's very interesting,' she said. She was not too knowledgeable when it came to science, but she wondered what was in the water to make to stun the undead. 'When can I meet her?'
-
"it would be informal to request to arrange a greeting today but if she she doesn't mind meeting you on her break then you could meet today. Otherwise tomorrow would be your time to meet" jack said. He knew the maids had a busy schedule but they tended to be able to change their schedules easy as long as they got a notice for something happening the next day.
-
'Sounds good,' Mildred said happily. She liked having something to look forward to, even if it was as simple as asking to borrow someone's shoes. Mildred looked out the window, watching the moonlight stream through the glass.
