"he's a coward. Hiding away in his palace while he sentences his people to death. If he has the resources he should give his subjects all that they need." Jack said. He was always mad at the Human king for his cruelty. It was unnecessary in his eyes
-
'I'm lucky I wasn't ever arrested. I would've been hung in front of the whole town for my thievery,' Mildred said. 'But I suppose if your guards found me I wasn't doing a very good job of hiding.'
-
"thievery should prove to a king that he is not doing a very good job providing for his subjects. It is no reason to hang someone. Your king is not only a coward but a fool." Jack said. He had a distaste for human kings for a very long time. Longer than he remembered. Kings were often gracious in the storybooks he'd read but he did not see them that way
-
'I guess...' Mildred said quietly. She was thinking about the priests in church that said stealing was a sin and those who do it should be punished. Since then she'd thought what she did was wrong, but Jack made a good point.
-
"so then, I heard you mention a war. I'd like to hear about what you're human king is sacrificing his subjects over." Jack said. Frederick once told him both of his parents worked in the king's army. His father was a decorated general being a noble, and his mother made food for them on the go. Jack always thought it odd that a noblewoman worked in the army but he suspected there might be more to it.
-
'Land, I suspect. He waged war on the witches and wizards in the north. Most like!y for resources or land. The humans won, of course, but I haven't seen living conditions improve since,' Mildred mused. 'Maybe it did for the people who could pay for it...'
-
"if he wagered more land he should have more than enough resources to protect his subjects. That's how you know he's a fool. He's no better than his jester." Jack said. He was fond of jesters but that didn't mean the king wasn't an idiot. Jesters were idiots for laughs unlike the human king.
-
Mildred glanced down at the book on the floor. 'Well...' she started, but couldn't think of some way to defend the king so she shut her mouth again. It felt like somebody was watching her, like how she felt in the human town. She could be completely alone and yet it felt like she was watched. If she said something horrible about the king they'd come for her. She'd seen it happen.
-
"if the humans ever came for my town they'd be obliterated the moment the sun went down. Do you know why?" Jack questioned. The answer was probably his favorite part of being king. He was sure that if humans ever attacked nosfera would kill them before they even got to the palace.
-
Mildred glanced back up at him. 'No,' she stated, shaking her head. 'Why?'
-
"because even if my subjects weren't blood thirsty 'beasts' they love this place. They love living here so much they'd never allow it to be invaded by your heartless human kings." Jack said. He was proud of his subjects and happy they loved it here. Each undead soul in the town had their own happy life and most of them thanked jack for that
-
A small smile tugged at the corners of Mildred's mouth. 'I'm glad,' she said. 'It sounds nice here.' It truly did. Mildred couldn't think of a time she was truly content with her life after the fire. She'd thought she'd never be happy without her family, but maybe that would change in her time here.
-
"it's the best kingdom for miles around. I used to think the mage kingdoms were great, but they were invaded easily by your human king." Jack said. He was told great stories of the abilities of mages, it made him almost sad to hear they'd fallen considering how Alexander talked about them
-
'Unfortunately.' Mildred sighed. 'I used to have a mage friend. We used to play together all the time. His family were fleeing from a battle between the humans and the mages. When they were found out they were killed in the street.' Mildred's shoulders slumped at the memory.
-
"the human king is terrible. I'd end his bloodline if it were my choice. Though it wouldn't do much good. If I ended your human king a new power hungry man would take his place since I can't run a human kingdom." Jack mused. He would have been very happy if he could help the living souls suffering but he couldn't help light dwellers
