"I'm sorry I didn't protect you brother. I failed and it's my fault. I wish I could change your fate." Jack said to Alexander. He watched his older brother breathing. It was a small comfort that Alexander was alive but he knew he'd never wake up
-
One of the men grabbed the bottom of her skirt. 'Let me ooout,' he moaned in a raspy voice. Mildred pulled away and quickened pace, further into what she'd decided was the the dungeon.
-
"Wilhelm talks like you never existed anymore. I think he's afraid of remembering. It's one of his biggest regrets he couldn't save you either." Jack said to the sleeping man.
-
Mildred noticed a silhouette talking to some kind of box. She recognised the voice but couldn't quite place it, and out her hand in front of the light her candle gave off so he didn't see her.
-
"I wish I could talk to you again, and you could tell me if I'm a disappointment to you or not. I wish I could see you get into trouble again or hear you talk about the wonders of the daytime world. I wish you were here with me Alexander." Jack said. He felt the tears ran down his face as he sobbed over the glass coffin
-
Alexander. Mildred remembered Jack tell her that was his brother's name. She stepped closer, slowly moving the hand away from the flame. The figure was Jack. Mildred watched him curiously. She felt sorry for him, though wasn't sure if she should intervene.
-
"I miss you so much." Jack sobbed through his sentences. "I'm so sorry I let you down brother. It should've been me!" He cried out. He gripped the glass coffin tighter
-
Mildred watched. It felt wrong to be eavesdropping like this. She covered the candle again and hoped Jack wouldn't notice her. She didn't know if he'd be very mad at her, and frankly didn't feel so keen to find out.
-
"I wish I could ask you more, like, what were mother and father like? Did you ever get betrayed before the incident? Mostly importantly though, I wonder if after everything I've done... do you still love me brother?" Jack asked Alexander. Alexander just breathed like normal. Jack sobbed again
-
Mildred stepped forward again, uncovering the light of the flame slowly. 'Prince?' she asked him quietly. 'Are.. you OK?'
-
Jack turned around, his eyes were wet with tears. "Why are you here? No one comes down here! Go away! GET OUT!" Jack screamed. He couldn't let anyone down here, he didn't let anyone near that room
-
Mildred flinched backwards, startled. She swallowed and clenched her jaw, then turned and ran. Back up the trapdoor, which she slammed shut when she was back in the library.
Mildred set the candle back on the table with shaky hands. The sight of the coffin had scared her. Never in her life had she seen a dead body, and she didn't wish to again.
It took Mildred a moment to catch her breath and get that terrible image out of her mind. -
"goodbye Alexander." Jack said. He sobbed as he once again shut the door and locked his brother's room. He walked up the stairs somberly. He decided to head back to his room for the night
-
Mildred sat back down on the reading chair, leaning back and closing her eyes. That wasn't true. She had seen a dead body, a horrible memory she should've forgotten long ago. She grabbed her book and flipped to the page she'd got up to, then read to take her mind off her own thoughts, feeling bad for eavesdropping on Jack.
-
Jack sat in his room on an actual bed. He has two resting places in his room, his coffin and the bed. Anyone could guess who the bed belonged to, it was Frederick's. Jack still slept on it every once in a while. It helped calm his troubled mind. He grabbed the rabbit stuffed animal left on the bed. It was once a real rabbit jack kept as a pet, but it died of old age years ago
