'That makes sense,' Mildred said thoughtfully, nodding. 'I imagine it would be boring sometimes. I think it'll be hard for you to get peace and quiet, now that I'm here. My mother used to say I talked nonstop and scolded me for being so loud.' She smiled at the faint memory and chuckled, indicating she was joking.
-
"I'll be glad to have a talkative person here again. This place has been too quiet for five years too long." Jack said. He remembered before Frederick appeared the palace was also silent
-
Again. Mildred imagined he was referring to Frederick Bavlenca. He did seem like quite the character, Mildred thought.
'So long it doesn't get too irritating,' Mildred said. She remembered her brother making fun that her middle name was Pearl one time, and told her pearls were make from constant irritation. From then on he called her Constant Irritation whenever she was being annoying. Mildred called her brother Donkey in return. -
"I'm sure it won't. A silent castle is boring." Jack said. He couldn't handle sitting around in silence and being bored out of his mind. It felt like a chore.
-
'I suppose,' Mildred said, cocking her head at Jack slightly. 'Is it true that vampires sleep during the day and are active at night? Or do they not sleep at all?'
-
"I prefer to sleep. There's too many windows throughout the halls for us to walk around in the day, and if we stay up we have to drink more blood. There's only two vampires I've ever known who could survive the sun, and that was my brother and the current court necromancer nosfera." Jack said. He'd remembered his brother walking out during the day to obtain rabbits for him and search for undead who were in hiding far from the kingdom.
-
'Are vampires sensitive to the sun?' Mildred asked, remembering reading that in a story about an evil vampires eating half a town. Now that seemed unlikely, but still possible.
-
"Most of us would die if we touched the rays of the sun. It makes obtaining most things difficult. We've found ways to adapt though. Milk can substitute blood if drank enough, rabbits blood helps to quell thirst, vegetables can be grown in complete darkness if helped by the nutrients of fungi." Jack said. These were all innovations made by his family. He personally found out about the fungi. It was a great achievement even though it wasn't particularly important
-
'That's pretty cool,' Mildred said, and she meant it. In the human town, fruits and vegetables were imported because the soil was dry and sandy. In the rare occasion something would grow they'd pray that the bugs wouldn't get to it or that thieves didn't take it. Mildred had to admit that she herself had stolen some drops.

"now, you humans, no offense intended, but you often disregard fungi as a nuisance due to its tendency to grow where things are rotten but it's actually very good for healthy soil and food. There are several edible species of fungi and they can even be used to substitute for meat in times of famine." Jack said. He had read through several books about mycelium as well as done studies on them. He used to even grow mushrooms before he had his political responsibilities.
-
'No offence taken. Most of us do have reasonings to that, however. I never went to school because of my family's lack of money, neither did my brother or my mother when she was younger. Peasants aren't allowed in local libraries either, so we wouldn't know which ones are edible,' Mildred said with a shrug. 'But that is pretty cool. I don't know why the king doesn't use that knowledge to feed his poor citizens.'
-
"it is simple. There's two reasons why the king wouldn't. He is either greedy or ignorant and possibly both." Jack said. Studies about mycelium were easy to obtain and often simplified for people who would benefit from the knowledge. He was able to read through the studies as a child so he could not understand why a king couldn't read a book
-
'I suppose,' Mildred said, remembering what would happen if she said such a thing in the human town. She was pretty sure she wouldn't be arrested for speaking horribly about a human King here, though didn't want to take many chances. She couldn't think of a good thing to say on the topic, she didn't know much about fungi, so she left it at that.
-
"Here in the kingdom of the undead everyone can read. If they can't they could learn at any time. We freely provide books of our alphabet and tutors from around the noble houses for the people to learn our language and writing." Jack said. He remembered dreading the visits that his brother had scheduled for him and hating the dictionary even more but in the end he was happy he could read and write
