"the last person I was friends with betrayed me more than anyone in the history of my life and I trusted him more than any other." Jack said he scoffed bitterly at his own trust. He should've seen it coming from a human. It was his own fault really for allowing himself to get so close and trusting him so much.
-
'Frederick?' Mildred asked before she could stop herself. She winced, remembering how angry Jack had gotten last time she mentioned the name. 'Sorry. You don't have the answer that,' she said quietly, the chewed her bottom lip in spite of herself.
-
"I can't even think of his name without regret and betrayal flooding my mind. Don't mention him." Jack said. He looked at Mildred, so far she'd mentioned Frederick at least twice. He'd wondered if she was trying to pry for information. If that was the case it couldn't be good. Too much prying could get her killed.
-
'I'm sorry,' Mildred said again, and she meant it. 'I won't say his name again. It just sort of.... slipped out.' She didn't want to upset Jack again, so she decided to keep her mouth shut about it. Maybe Frederick's diary would have some for information, or perhaps Wilhelm would be willing to tell her more.
-
"I understand, but continue mentioning him and you'll go without lunch for the week." Jack said. That was a small punishment he'd made up when Frederick still lived there. It wasn't detrimental to human health but it was not pleasant to go without lunch. Jack then remembered sandwiches Wilhelm used to make that were perfect for lunches
-
Mildred nodded. She was used to going without food, but it still didn't make the idea pleasant. 'Understood,' Mildred said.
-
"now then, I thought I should tell you since you'll be staying here for the foreseeable future that the palace will be cutting back on honey products so that the kingdom will have more wax." Jack said. He still had to inform Wilhelm too, but he knew the cook would likely freak out when he was told. Wilhelm had been picky about the food he cooked ever since Frederick put him back to work.
-
'That's fine,' Mildred said with a shrug. 'I could never really afford it anyway.' She gazed out the window. It was dark out. She thought of where she would be if she hadn't been kidnapped, sleeping in an alleyway with perhaps a stolen jacket or shawl. It was a nice thought that she had a bed to sleep in now. 'Are you fond of books, Prince?'
-
"I am very fond of books" jack said smiling. "I have read every book in this palace and then some. I have even started writing poetry for more books in the palace. We also have a Library within the west wing." He gestured to the left of the throne. He had spent hours in the library pouring through every book as he grew up. The library was like his secret resting place at the time
-
'We do?' Mildred's face lit up as she looked back at Jack. 'Oh, that's wonderful! I can never get my hands on many books, but when I do I only allow myself to read a chapter a day so my excitement lasts longer. Rereading is never quite the same as reading a book for the first time. How many are there?'
-
"there's at least a thousand from all over the world. Some are the only translations from languages long forgotten. We even have books that teach those ancient languages." Jack said. He learned Latin through one of those old books.
-
'A thousand!' Mildred said happily. 'I might be spending half my days in there, if you wouldn't mind.' She chuckled.
-
"Feel free to spend your time however you wish." Jack said. He looked back to Mildred from the window. Mildred was fairly interesting to talk to. He had a feeling his days would be more interesting from here on out
-
Mildred smiled. 'Thank you,' she said quietly. She tried to think of something else interesting to say, or a question to ask. 'Do you enjoy being a prince?' she asked Jack curiously. She'd always wondered what it was like to be royalty.
-
"I.... well, it's an odd feeling to put into words. It's fun to make rules and live in luxury, but it's very lonely and boring." Jack said. He'd been alone throughout most of the time he reigned as the vampire prince and it was boring with no one to talk to.
