Mildred continued to eat. When she finished her meal she glanced at where Jack had previously been sitting, her brows furrowed into a thoughtful frown. Jack Coros was certainly an interesting man - if that's what you could even call a vampire. She pondered him and Frederick and her own question, not quite knowing the answer to Jack and Frederick and her question. After a few minutes, Mildred reached over and rang the bell for the next course, figuring she had nothing better to do than eat it.
-
Wilhelm walked in, wheeling around a tray and looked around for Jack. "The ham is still here? Where is his majesty? " Wilhelm asked. Meanwhile Jack drank the blood from the pitcher and remembered the sad night he'd never forget. He rubbed his eye patch and then took it off, dipping his fingers into his empty eye socket and wincing despite the emptiness. He wished he'd never met Frederick bavlenca and he wished he'd never fallen in love.
-
'He left,' Mildred answered, tapping her fingers against her goblet as a way of fiddling. 'To drink his blood, I presume. He might'nt have been very hungry.'
-
"but honey glazed ham is his favorite. He probably got upset." Wilhelm said. He looked around for Jack. "For the third course I made semla with warm milk and also pokeberry pie, but you can't eat that." Wilhelm set down the food and as he did he whispered "just between you and me you're much nicer than that bavlenca boy." Jack meanwhile continued his blood drinking
-
'What was he like?' Mildred asked quietly to match his whisper. 'The Bavlenca.' She couldn't stop herself from asking, thinking maybe the chef would tell her more about Frederick Bavlenca, who'd seemed to cause Jack Coros great pain and who perhaps was rude to his servants.
-
"he was a very rude and rowdy boy. He called the young Lord all sorts of names and wandered out at night all of the time. He sent back any meal he deemed imperfect which wasted much perfectly good meat. The young master just forgave him for all of it, the boy was smitten I tell you." Wilhelm said jack finished off his pitcher of blood and walked over to the goblet. He picked it up and carried it back to his throne
-
Mildred frowned. 'That's awful,' she said. She'd never seen anyone act such a way. But she did live in a town with many poor people, and they valued food like gold. 'Is that why Jack Coros seems to hate him so much? Or did he do something very bad?'
-
"oh, you didn't know." Wilhelm said. He got really close to Mildred's ear and whispered "Frederick bavlenca is the thief that stole his majesty's eye." Jack meanwhile held the goblet as tears threatened to fall from his eyes once again. He spoke to the goblet as silly as it sounds. It gave him comfort. "Hey Frederick. I'm sorry I let you down." He whispered
-
Mildred's eyes widened. 'W-what?' she stuttered from the pure shock. 'What made him do such a thing? And why?'
-
Wilhelm backed away. "No. I'm not telling you. I'm not telling another human ever what that eye can do. I have to go now, enjoy your meal." Wilhelm said before shuffling frantically back to the kitchen jack continued talking to the goblet. "I'm sorry Frederick. I said anything you asked I'd give. I'm sorry I'd forgotten the powers my eyes held. All you had to do was ask and I'd have given you my eye."
-
Mildred tilted her head at the back of the chef, watching him disappear back into the kitchen. 'What an eye can do,' she mumbled, repeating his words. 'I wonder what a vampire's eye can do. Though I don't tend to find out by plucking one out of somebody's skull.' She shuddered and started eating her food, figuring she shouldn't try and pry answers out of the chef later. It seemed a hard topic for both him and Jack.
-
Jack set down the goblet and walked over to the spot the blood had spilled. He would have to get a maid to wash it out of carpet. He smelled a particular dessert from the kitchen. "Semlor? Right when I loose my appetite, how mean." Jack mumbled, chuckling in spite of himself.
-
Mildred thought and pondered and thought some more, before coming to a conclusion. 'Magic eyes,' she muttered to herself, watching the dessert in front of her like it would respond. 'If vampires are real, why shouldn't magic be?' It wasn't a very logical reasoning, but it was better than eyes being worth a lot of money. She finished her food and set down her cutlery, wondering if she'd have to help wash up. 'Thank you!' she called into the kitchen.
-
Wilhelm heard the shout and was surprised. "You could just ring the bell for us to pick up the plates!" Wilhelm shouted from the kitchen. Jack had made the decision that later he'd go back and ask for his semlor.
-
'Oh,' Mildred muttered. She hadn't thought of that. She reached over and rang the bell, then stood and set her cutlery on top of her plate like she'd heard polite people do.
