'I suppose. You said you brought me here to talk. How often did you want to?' Mildred asked, cocking her head. It would probably be the only thing that wouldn't be dull or threatening her with death. Jack Coros seemed interesting enough. Based on Jack's hatred for that Frederick Bavlenca, his backstory would at least be a good story if she warmed up to him enough that he'd tell her, which now seemed quite unlikely.
-
"I could talk your ears off human, but in any case whatever is happening I must leave an hour before sunrise. Of all the superstitions on us vampires the one about the sun is true. I'll burn to bits if I ever touch the sun's rays." Jack said. He sat down, looking to the desk. He closed his eye and looked back
-
'Sounds good,' Mildred said with a small smile. 'Do vampires hate garlic, or is that a superstition too?' She was genuinely curious about this, and had been wondering it since she met Jack. 'And is it true that if you're missing a finger you're a vampire?'
-
"well, we're not fond of the smell but the taste can be pleasant. As for fingers, most of my people have all ten. Some even have eleven fingers. I've only ever lost an eye" Jack said. He looked at his hands and sure enough there were ten fingers.
-
'And if you die unseen and alone, do you come back as a vampire too?' Mildred asked, her mind buzzing with questions. She was sure she'd eventually talk Jack's ears off instead of the other way around.
-
"I am... not sure. It sounds like a terrible thing to happen though. Alone and unseen... the thought of dying in such a sad way almost makes immortality seem better." Jack said. He didn't want to think about what that was like. It used to be he'd never die alone but with everything in his wretched eternal life it almost seemed possible.
-
'Yeah...' Mildred agreed, thinking about it. She probably would, being homeless and a thief. Dying after being loved and cared for seemed impossible in the life she'd been given. She shook the thought off and turned her attention back to Jack. 'Anyway, what do you wish to talk about?'
-
"well, what is it like living in a human town? I want to know about it. On a separate note, it is almost time to dine." Jack said. It was hard to tell time in this room when here was no windows but he learned to tell by the sound of the servants walking past. One could even call it a strange skill. He remembered a fugitive was once impressed by it
-
'Good to know,' Mildred said, nodding. She was starving after two whole days without food, though she should've been used to it. 'Well, I suppose I'm not a fair witness to that. You see, I don't live in a house, and I'm not particularly well-off when it comes to money, so it's a little more rough for me. But I imagine for people who do, that it'd be nice.'
-
"I want to hear of your experience with the human city, houseless or not. I've already heard the perspective of one with a house. Believe it or not that human wasn't fond of the human city." Jack almost laughed in spite of himself. He looked back at the human portrait. The man in the portrait was smiling like he always did.
-
Mildred thought. She wasn't used to sharing her feelings, except in a prayer. And even then it felt like nobody was listening.
'Rough,' Mildred said quietly. 'I steal things sometimes, but I barely ever have food to eat or money to spend. I wonder what I did wrong...' She looked at herself in a small mirror mounted on the wall. The girl staring back was almost unrecognisable. 'I wonder why I was left to live like this. I suppose it had to be someone, right?' Mildred looked back at Jack. -
"no one should have to live like that. In my kingdom everyone eats, and everything has a place to stay. Whether in the palace or their own home I will not let the people of this kingdom suffer unlike the humans in your human towns." Jack said. It was true, he could never let his subjects die off like that.
-
A small smile tugged at the corners of Mildred's mouth. 'That sounds nice. Alas, the human King can't take care of everybody at once. Some unlucky people aren't cared for. It's the way of life,' Mildred said, shrugging. She'd never heard of a city where everybody got a home and food and weren't treated like scum. It was a nice thought.
-
"then the human king truly can't care for all his subjects." Jack said. He had low opinions of human kings due to many things Fredrick had told him, but also for the way humans had to live in the worst conditions. When he was younger he'd despised the king for leaving his subjects without a place to sleep. It was before he understood the concept that humans would not die if they slept outside
-
'He does,' Mildred said, though uncertainly, and it showed in her voice. 'Just not everybody. I imagine it'd be hard ruling over a large city...' She trailed off, looking back at herself in the mirror. Her wide brown eyes and torn clothes and knotted hair made her unrecognisable to the person she'd been years ago. It almost made her cry, but she kept herself composed.
