"how often do you think we find people who aren't cruel? Also, your race never often talked to us and went back so your assumptions are usually unfounded." Jack said. He could see the logic but he never once met a human that wasn't cruel while vampires never had an issue with holy places.
-
'Neither did yours,' Mildred said, folding her arms. 'I'd never seen a vampire before 2 days ago, and didn't think they even existed.' She paused before making her next point. 'We're not all cruel. Most of us have good intentions. I don't know who wronged you but it's unfair to think of my race as cruel based off them. There might be more to us than meets the eye.'
-
"then tell me this, if you saw me dying from a stab wound, would you help me? Or since I'm just a rotten vampire would you let me bleed out?" Jack asked, disdain lacing his voice. This situation was far too familiar to him. It made him almost angry. He glared up at the portrait. He thought about burning it many times but he couldn't until he got an answer once in for all
-
Mildred thought. 'I'd try to help you. I would with most people,' she decided, though her voice remained cold. 'There wouldn't be much I could do, though, so I'd call for a doctor or someone who could.'
She watched him closely, her brows furrowed into a frown. He looked irritated, or a little mad, but Mildred couldn't place why. She figured she'd need to ask him, but didn't say anything about it. -
"that is a nice thought. Well, I'll stop the generalization now I suppose. You're likely to complain about it further." Jack said. He broke eye contact from the portrait and actually looked at Mildred. He could tell she was some sort of peasant. A bit further on the raggedy side so possibly homeless. He would never leave his subjects to have no dwelling unlike the humans but he would not mention that.
-
'I am,' Mildred agreed. 'I have one more question for you, Prince Jack Coros.' She watched him, pulling her legs up onto the bed and crossing them. 'What's it like here for humans? Figuring I won't be able to leave for quite some time.'
-
"well, I won't lie it can be difficult. I'd advise you to avoid the town at night unless you can convince one of the guards to protect you and not kill you while you're alone. I've allowed humans in the past to freely roam the castle but be wary of the undead. They can and will bite. You will be served three meals a day as I will provide food for humans housed within my castle. One other thing, humans should avoid mentioning eyes or the name Frederick." Jack said as he thought. There were more rules and precautions but he figured those would be good for now.
-
Mildred raised an eyebrow at that last part, but didn't ask about it. 'That sounds easy enough,' she said. Three meals a day was far more than she got in the human town, so she didn't argue about the guard protection outside the castle part. 'Do you have any questions?' she asked Jack, thinking he must have at least one.
-
"did you live in the same town as the bavlenca family?" Jack asked. He looked back at the portrait. He'd never forget the bavlenca name as long as he lived. As he saw it they were thieves, and tricksters, and more charming than anyone he'd ever met. He was almost angry that the one thing he could think to ask was about that man. It was so pathetic.
-
'Bavlenca,' Mildred muttered, thinking about the name. 'I've heard of it. I think someone called Freder- Someone from that family was reported missing. It was in almost every newspaper,' she said, careful not to mention the name Frederick.
-
A tear almost fell from Jack's eye. "So he didn't return." Jack mumbled. "Thank you for the information. Just one rule for you though, human don't touch the black horse in the stables." Jack said to Mildred. Jack looked back at the portrait again.
-
'I won't, animals hate me anyway,' Mildred shrugged. 'Why did you ask about the Bavlencas, if you don't mind me asking?' She glanced at the portrait on the wall. 'Was Frederick Bavlenca your friend?' she asked, looking back at Jack.
-
"do not mention Frederick bavlenca!" Jack shouted jumping up. His eyes glowed fiercely for a few brief seconds. He calmed down and sat back down. "You could say me and him were friends. I cared for him deeply but..." Jack reached up to his eye patch before dropping his hand. "What he and him were doesn't matter anymore. He's currently a fugitive in my kingdom and I will bring him to justice." His eyes glowed red talking about Frederick.
-
Mildred flinched backwards when Jack raised his voice, eyes widening slightly. She swallowed. 'I understand,' she said quietly, though didn't really. She had a lot of questions, though felt it better not to ask them at this time. She cleared her throat nervously.
'Um, anything else?' Mildred asked, only just noticing his glowing eyes. -
"I suppose there's nothing more. If that is all I will be heading back to the throne room." Jack said, standing up. He was technically required to be in the throne room when he wasn't out on business. If he could leave he would've spent even more time with... he didn't want to think of the fugitive right now. He scratched his face around the eye patch.
