After a pause, the guard sighed. Mildred heard the sound of his footsteps growing quieter and quieter. She sighed in relief and sat down on the bed. It was small and had one thin blanket, and creaked every time Mildred shifted her weight.
The guard entered the throne room, waiting for the two to finish their conversation. -
"Mmmhmm, suuure, tell me when you get the mortals to respect you sweet prince. Ciao." Nosfera said walking away. "Goodnight." Jack said closing his eyes due to the sourness of the conversation. He'd been put in a bit of a bad mood for the night. He wished he could go talk to Smokey.
-
When Nosfera left, the guard spoke. 'Mildred- The mortal wishes to speak with you,' he said.
Mildred tapped her index fingers on her knees, waiting for either the guard to come back or the prince to enter. -
Jack sighed. "Lead the way, if you would, please." Jack said to the guard. He walked down the stairs to the throne remembering when Fredrick first appeared in the palace. He stood right in the center of the blood red carpet and despite it all, the boy grinned when he saw the vampire prince of all people
-
The guard nodded once and lead the Jack to Mildred's new room. He unlocked and opened the door, to reveal the dirty brunette sitting on the bed with a chair set opposite her.
'Hello,' Mildred said to the prince. -
"greetings mortal. Jack said, stepping into the room. It was just like he remembered it. Dim and dreary like the rest of the palace, but to him it held a certain warmth. He still saw the journal that Fredrick used to write in. It was like he was going to come back tomorrow to finish the journal entry. Jack knew that man would never come back.
-
Mildred watched the guard shut the door, then shifted her gaze to Jack. 'Please sit,' she said, motioning to the chair in front of her. She was trying to stay as polite as possible.
-
Jack sat down cautiously. He didn't particularly trust humans. He looked at the portrait on the wall heavily obscured by shadows. It was finished the night before the treacherous man left his castle with the very key to human immortality. A betrayal jack would never forget.
-
Mildred watched him closely, her eyes narrowing at him. 'What do you wish to do with me, first of all?'
-
"I wish to talk to you. It is not often that I'm able to actually talk to the undead. As a prince the staff of my palace only assume they're in trouble when I speak to them so they're on edge and the nobles all have family affairs to deal with so they don't often visit." Jack said. He never got used to the lack of undead to talk to, the only undead creature who ever listened was smokey, a horse.
-
Mildred tried not to act too surprised. She was expecting him to eat her or leave her to rot or something.
'Alright. What is your name?' she asked him, relaxing a little. Maybe she wouldn't die here after all. -
"my name is Jack Coros the first. I am the 2nd heir in my line and the 25 prince in the kingdoms history." Jack said. It was his full formal greeting and he didn't often use it due to the lack of times he was able to talk to people outside of the kingdom.
-
Mildred nodded slowly, smoothing down her skirt after fiddling with it enough. She looked back up at the prince, a new curiosity sparking in her eyes. 'And, Prince Jack Coros, why and how did you come to the conclusion that you'd leave me alive? Other than a lack of people to talk to. And why didn't you just leave me to starve and die lost in your kingdom?'
-
"well, I'll admit I do have one more reason for retrieving you. I want to find out why humans are so treacherous and cruel." Jack said looking at the portrait. If he could understand why maybe he'd finally understand why his room was incomplete, why his eye was gone, and why his heart was torn out of it's rightful place. He needed to know why no matter what he did the one human he cared for ran away
-
Mildred raised an eyebrow. 'Why, wasn't it you who said it was unfair the human race thought yours to be unholy?' she asked, cocking her head slightly. 'It's unfair to think the entire human race cruel based off of the actions of one person.'
