"I still doubt it but I won't press further." Jack said. He stood up. "It is about dinnertime. Near the end of the room is a small washroom the basin still has water although it's probably been frozen over. You may use the washroom to wash up before dinner. Avoid the clothes in the closet as they are for someone else but feel free to use the comb wherever he put it. I must talk to the kitchen staff before dinner is served" jack said heading to the door
-
'Thank you,' Mildred said, turning her attention back to Jack. She stood up and walked towards the washroom. 'Y'know, you don't seem as vile as I first thought you were,' she said thoughtfully, cocking her head at him before disappearing into the washroom.
-
Jack nodded reflectively at that comment. It was certainly something to hear. He left the room to head to the kitchen. Dinner preparations were most likely off kilter due to all of the fuss today. He had meals made almost everyday and if something upset him the kitchen staff would always try to make a bigger meal. It was ridiculous but he knew they just wanted to help, after all vampires don't need to eat meals like this but he did. He'd eaten at least one meal every night since Frederick had wiggled his way into the inner workings of the palace. Eating made him feel... a little less empty. He walked into the kitchen so see them preparing a 3 course meal. Jack sighed. He looked around the kitchen for the head chef
-
Mildred cleaned the dirt and muck off her face in the washroom, scrubbing with a cloth which she couldn't tell if it was clean or not. She looked back at herself in the mirror. Her skin was slightly pale, she noticed, under the grime. She brushed her hair as best she could with all the knots with the comb she found on top of the wardrobe. After a few minutes of staring at her slightly cleaner self in the mirror with a smile, she walked back into the bedroom and sat on the bed, picking at the grit in her fingernails.
-
Jack finally found the chef after a few minutes. "What is going on here?" He asked with an exhausted sigh. "Well, we were just cooking up a nice meal to make you feel better sire." The chef reported. "There is no need for that. I am perfectly fine with my regular meals, Wilhelm." Jack said to his cook. "Fr- the fugitive used to say extra food made most things better didn't he? We just want you feeling your best." Wilhelm exclaimed. "Either way I can't eat all of this Wilhelm. Cut back on the food. Also try to get some rest between meals, you're starting to go red from the stress and it's not good to work for that long." Jack said to Wilhelm.
-
Mildred lay down on the bed, which creaked and wobbled under her. Questions buzzed through her mind, ones she couldn't answer or think about too long without it hurting her head. She was exhausted and her stomach hurt from lack of food.
-
Wilhelm walked off surprised. Jack walked out of the kitchen and decided he should talk to the maidservants about letting Mildred borrow some of their clothes. He was sure it would be more comfortable than living in beggar rags. From what he knew beggar clothes were itchy and had the texture of burlap. It was the worst fabric in his opinion. He walked to the throne room to check if any visitors had appeared before heading to the servants quarters. He found a maid washing the floor. "Hello miss." He said trying to be non-threatening. She immediately dropped her mop and curtseyed to jack. "Hello sire. I apologize for not mopping this floor correctly!" She shouted eagerly.
-
Mildred eventually sat up slowly, ignoring the pain in her stomach. She stood and looked around the room, watching the painting of a ginger boy for a bit before noticing a journal. Mildred grabbed the journal and opened it slowly. The pages looked thin and had the smell of old paper. She flipped through it, reading a few of the diary entries.
-
The diary entries went something like this
"Dear diary, today I was kidnapped on a nightly walk. This white haired man says he's the"prince of the undead" I think he's bluffing. He acts very serious but I can only see him as some goofy man pretending to be regal. He said his name was Jack.
Meanwhile jack spoke to the maid. "You were mopping just fine, I only wanted to see if I could borrow a dress for a new guest." Jack said. "Of course, I'd be honored to lend you any of my belongings sire." The maid said eagerly. She ran off to grab a dress to loan him. He was surprised at how quickly the maid just, loaned him her dress. -
Mildred chuckled. "Goofy", she thought, probably wasn't the best word to describe Jack Coros. She hadn't seen him even crack a chuckle yet, but she found the diary entries entertaining so she kept reading.
Mildred wondered if it belonged to Frederick Bavlenca, and why Jack seemed to hate him so much. It'd be a mystery she decided she'd spend her time here solving. -
The next diary entry went as follows "dear diary, another day away from father is another day well spent. Today the man called Jack came to see me. I told him I wouldn't talk to him until I had something to eat so he, the guy who called himself a prince, attempted to make potato soup. It was terrible but I congratulated him for trying. Later he took me to see his gardens. Since he only goes out at night it was filled with moonflowers but it was much prettier than the mansion grounds. Maybe this silly guy can help me. It doesn't matter as long as I don't have to listen to him talk about"the undead" anymore"
Meanwhile Jack waited for the maid. She returned with a casual and common green dress made with flax and cotton. "Thank you miss. I will give you a bonus this week for your help. Take it as payment for the dress." Jack said giving a small nod to the maid. "I don't need any payment sir I just want one thing, can you say my name? It's Celie. I wanna hear a prince say it." Celie said. "Okay then, thank you Celie." Jack replied. -
Mildred's interest was sparked. She very much wanted to see the gardens now, she'd never seen moonflower a before. She tried to imagine Jack Coros making potato soup and laughing with this Frederick Bavlenca. To her the undead prince seemed cold and serious, not goofy and fun-loving. She wanted to see the goofy side of him.

On the next page was this entry
"Dear diary, today it rained. Jack seemed happy about it but I thought it was boring, so naturally I snuck out of the room he kept me in and I wandered his castle. His servants stare worse than mine. Eventually I found a horse stable. There were a few horses but the most interesting ones were tucked away in a corner. They were both darker than the night sky with red eyes. It was like the legend of the dullahan carriage. The horses didn't seem to like me though so I headed up the stairs where I got scolded by jack. He talked like he was my mother which is just much to funny to forget diary. I almost wanted to draw him with a wig. It got so funny to think about that I laughed during his lecture. I've never seen the man look so shocked. Then he laughed too. I think me and Jack are starting to get along."
Meanwhile Jack left with the dress to go see Mildred and tell her that the meal was prepared. He could hear Celie squealing in the background. He made his way towards the room and looked out of one of the windows in the hall. He was the garden and remembered the last time he went there. It felt so bitter now that Frederick was gone. -
Mildred chuckled softly at the wig part. Frederick's family must've been well-off if they had servants. She thought what must've happened to him and Jack if now they despised each other. When she finished reading the entry, she tucked the journal under the bed to read later. It seemed entertaining, and she didn't want to waste it all now.
-
Jack got to Mildred's room and knocked on the door. He hoped that everything was going okay for Mildred. He wasn't incredibly fond of her like he was of the last human but she certainly deserved to be feeling better than earlier. He acknowledged that a vampire castle was probably the hardest place to feel safe at.
