'Come in!' Mildred called, assuming it was Jack. Usually she would've shouted "huh?" or "what?!" but it seemed wrong to be impolite in such a large castle. She brushed some blades off of grass off her skirt and turned her attention back to the door.
-
Jack opened the door and stepped in. "I borrowed a dress from one of the maids for you. It is made of flax and cotton. A meal has been prepared so you may eat whenever you grow hungry." Jack said, handing the dress to Mildred.
-
Mildred took the dress and stared at it. It was cleaner and much more comfortable than anything she'd worn in a long time. 'Thank you,' she said, looking back up at Jack with a grateful smile. 'Could I eat now? I'm famished.'
-
"of course. The chefs made more than enough food today so you may eat as much as you'd like." Jack said. He remembered the first time he assembled the kitchen for actual cooking it was a disaster he remembered. He even remembered cooking himself once. It had apparently given Frederick a 'distaste for potato soup' as he said.
-
Mildred grinned. 'Great! Which way to the dining room?' she asked, standing up. It seemed like forever she'd had a proper meal. Each day in the human town, if she was lucky she got two old apples and a half a stale loaf of bread.
-
"it is down the hall on the left, past the two purple armor statues. Don't sit in the seat in front of the fireplace or the guards will attack as that is my seat. I have some official documents to sign before I dine, also I figure you don't want to smell the blood when I eat." Jack said. He figured the directions were direct enough for a human. He didn't have to guide Frederick many places due to all of the trouble that man would get into. Jack sighed as he remembered Frederick crawling to the top of his throne and almost falling into the town to what would've been his death if he had a weaker grip.
-
Mildred nodded, heading towards the door. 'Thank you!' she exclaimed happily before walking down to the dining room. 'Down the hall on the left,' she muttered to herself, repeating his instructions. 'Past the two purple armor statues.' She got the the dining room and sat on one side of the long table, watching the fireplace crackle. The room smelt very nice, which Mildred assumed were the fumes from the kitchen.
-
In the dining room a large door opened and a short but thin man with a very large hat and apron walked in. "For tonights dinner! Oh, you're not his majesty. You must be the new human." The man said. "It seems we'll have to serve the meal early. Today we have a tomato soup as well as roasted pheasant and grilled leeks. The second course will come when his majesty comes to eat so it won't be cold for him." The chef said. The chef looked at Mildred and clicked his tongue. "Doesn't look a thing like master Frederick." The man muttered
Meanwhile jack sat on his throne and signed paper after paper. It was mostly status reports on the kingdom. The most interesting information was that a red haired vampire had been born for the first time in years. Jack signed the papers and reminisced about Frederick. It almost brought a tear to his eye -
'Frederick Bavlenca?' Mildred asked, hearing his mutter. 'What do you know about him?' Despite being very hungry, her curiosity hadn't been diminished. Then she remembered her manners. 'And thank you for the food. It sounds delicious.'
-
"oh no no no no, we do not talk about the Fred word here. His majesty would send me to the dungeons for the rest of the week and the kitchen would go up in flames. We avoid even saying the name." The chef said as he set out the food. Frederick bavlenca was a controversial name throughout the palace and everyone knew it.
Meanwhile Jack sorted through the documents. Currently he looked through the resource reports. The food and water was at a high in the kingdom but he'd have to sustain from honey products as wax was running low. They had their own bee farm as odd as it sounds but how else were they to get wax. In fact, farms were the job to one of the noble families. He believed it was the Carmellia family that took care of it. Varney thought he was crazy for wanting actual food from the farms but there was no complaints. -
'Oh. Well, thank you for the food,' Mildred said, a little disappointed, but deciding that the food made up for the lack of knowledge the chef shared with her. Maybe she could asked someone else, seeing as everybody seemed to know the man's name.
-
"no problem little lady. If you need anything from the kitchen ring the bell. Don't ring it too often though." The chef said before departing. He left a pitcher of water on the table as well as a goblet for Mildred.
Jack worked through the documents and in-between them all he saw an old sketch. It was him in a wig. He seemed to be shouting in the picture. Jack stared at it in pure shock for a few minutes before he started laughing. The echoes of his laugh in the empty throne room were almost uncanny but eventually those joyful laughs turned to sobs. He so deeply missed the mischievous man that once roamed the palace halls. -
Once the man was gone, Mildred started eating greedily. She ate very fast, finishing half her meal within five minutes. It felt very nice to have a full stomach, a feeling she'd never had often before. Then she felt bad for eating so improperly so she grabbed her cutlery and ate the rest of her meal, much more slower.
-
Jack cried in his empty throne room for the first time in a long time. After awhile he dried his eyes and headed to the dining hall. He could feel the eyes of a certain short chef practically jumping in excitement as jack headed to the dining hall. He did a brief wave to Mildred before taking his seat in front of the fireplace. He ate in a regular manner occasionally glancing towards the seat opposite of Mildred. He was lost in a memory. The chef walked out and set down two pitchers. One was filled with milk and the other was sealed shut. "Thank you Wilhelm. Jack said. Wilhelm bowed.
-
Mildred watched Jack, curious as to why no food was set out for him. Then she remembered that vampires drank blood, and assumed that's what was in the sealed pitcher. She poured some water for herself and drank out of the goblet. Clean water tasted so nice compared to some of the water she drank in the human town. She'd heard of people dying from drinking dirty water, and she remembered refraining from drinking anything for a whole week after that.
