The left guard checked the grandfather clock. 'And hour, sir,' he stated.
Mildred ran through the unfamiliar kingdom. It was large and complex, with pathways and roads turning this way and that. She wasn't sure she'd ever be able to get out. If the citizens were anything like their ruler, if she asked them for help they'd probably kill and drink her blood through a straw. Just the thought of it made her shudder. -
Jack let out a hefty sigh before sitting back down in his throne. "We still have my horse right? Send out the head general on my horse, if the mortal is not returned by sundown then..." Jack looked to the window. "I'll head out tomorrow night." Jack said solemnly. All he wanted was something to vary his nights and this human demands to take even that away. It was so.... mortal. He understood the fear she might feel but this was just, frustrating.
-
'Yes sir,' the guards said, and stalked off to spread the message. A few minutes later, the head general rode out into the kingdom, searching for the human the two guards had described. Female, brown hair, torn and dirty dress.
Mildred wasn't sure where to go. If someone had noticed she was gone, either the man would send someone after her or leave her to be killed with someone else. Either way, it wouldn't be a pleasant fate. -
Jack sat on his throne awaiting news. "On moonless nights in a kingdom gone, a weathered king would sing the song, and dream of one that long since passed, wishing for this not to last." Jack recited. He thought about the last mortal he met. Why he should never listen to humans. The young man with fiery orange hair that on the moonless night five years ago stole his heart and on the full moon night who stole his eye.
-
Mildred hid and tried to nick some food off of some people, but it seemed all vampires ate was blood and raw flesh. She shivered and hid in a narrow alleyway, attempting to get some sleep.
When the sun set, the general gave up and headed back to the castle. He stood before the brooding royal with a sigh. 'We couldn't find her, sir. But we doubt she's made it out of the kingdom' -
Jack once again sighed. "It seems tonight we sleep, and tomorrow we go out on the hunt. I will personally see the necromancer tomorrow night. Rest well because we head out next sundown." Jack said. He stood up and made his way to his bedroom. He still had the small bed his old lover slept in. He missed the charming ginger boy. He felt his eye patch then he started to get angry. How dare everything just leave him. How dare all of this happen.
-
Mildred slept lightly, waking up at every small sound. By morning she had bags under her eyes, and the town was empty and quiet. She remembered that vampires slept during the day, and used this opportunity to look for the exit to the kingdom. By sundown, though, she had gotten no further, and once again hid.
-
Jack woke up at sundown and went straight to the guards quarters. He woke up the chief before heading to the stables. There he met his horse. A black mare that used to belong to a dullahan. It was given to him on his coronation as a gift. He hoisted himself onto the horse and headed for a most well known noble in his kingdom. Nosfera the necromancer. She controlled the horses.
-
Mildred leaned against the wall of a butcher's shop, breathing a deep sigh. She was so hungry, so lost, so tired. This was how she'd die. Out in the streets, either from starvation or murder.
-
Jack banged on the door of nosfera, impatient for the hunt to be over. She opened the door slowly. "Hello Lord Coros. In need of my assistance?" She asked "I need horses. We're on a search." Jack said sternly. She nodded and walked towards the castle, summoning her own dead steed. Jack set his course back to town, riding at full speed, checking the streets.
-
Mildred pulled her jacket tighter around her. Now that people were out, she could probably steal a blanket or a thicker, warmer jumper. She emerged from her hiding spot, looking around.
-
Jack had pulled his horse to a stop to look up to his castle. "Smokey, at least you'll never abandon me. Unlike that boy. Oh Fredrick, why did you betray me." Jack said touching his eye patch. He looked up further to the silver of the moon showing. They moon was the only thing that could ever truly understand. He sat up and set off on his search.
-
Mildred walked further out into the open, towards a family that looked well-off. She tried to grab something off them but got pushed away and spat on.
-
Jack noticed in the distance a family of much lower status. At their feet was a girl with ragged brown hair. He set off towards them fast on smokey, getting there in almost the blink of an eye. He pulled the reigns to stop his horse. "Halt girl." He spoke curtly to the ragged brown haired girl.
-
Mildred winced. This voice she recognised - the authoritive, obnoxious voice. She slowly looked up to see the prince, huffing.
'Hello,' she said coldly.
