"It would have most likely ended terribly for you if I wasn't so mad. You probably would've been eaten at worst." Jack said. He rationalized several things that definitely could've happened but none were escape. Only one human ever left the city of the undead and the escape was unknown at best
-
'It was a good thing you were in such a fury, then,' Mildred said, a smile playing on her lips. She thought about the several things that could've happened to her, but the things that came to her mind weren't could. She could imagine the irony of it all. 'I honestly don't know what was going through my head at the time. Perhaps my fear and impulsiveness got the better of me.'
-
"I understand fear. Many people have been scared by the premise of blood drinking people. They were scared into eating more garlic because of it." Jack said. Garlic was a very useful ingredient and he'd never inherently disliked it even though some people in his life (by some people he meant Wilhelm) disliked garlic heavily.
-
'If I had the choice, I probably would've done that yesterday,' Mildred said. She cocked her head at Jack, watching the man she'd previously thought to be a monster. 'But you're not as bad as I thought you were. A little touchy, but anyone with such a horrible backstory has an excuse.'
-
"I don't need to be excused for my actions. I should own up to them. That being said, sorry for threatening to kill you even though I probably would've." Jack said. He'd killed many people out of necessity. It was simply something he had to do as a royal vampire. He remembered Talia at that moment, crazy human. She had no reason to kill but he couldn't live without blood.
-
'Apology accepted. Nothing I'm not used to, anyway. I just particularly didn't like the idea of being eaten alive,' Mildred said with a shrug. Sometimes royal guards would come down to the town and threatened to kill the villagers who didn't co-operate with them and whatever they wanted. Or the people she stole from would threaten to hurt her if she did it again.
-
"makes sense. I would understand not wanting to be bled dry." Jack said. It seemed ghastly looking at it. He couldn't judge how scary it was but it certainly didn't look pleasant. He looked out of the window and realized it was high moon. "Ah, it seems it's time for lunch. I'll be getting my semlors now." Jack said standing up
-
'Alright. Which way is the library?' Mildred asked, standing also. She was keen to get started reading as soon as possible.
-
"That would be in the West wing to the left. Don't take any stairs and you're sure to find it. Meanwhile I'll be heading to the dining hall." Jack said walking to the right. He also thought he should check his mushroom cave
-
'Thank you,' Mildred said, walking down to the west wing. She wasn't sure if she had to bow on her way out so she did a clumsy curtsy, then hurried off to the library.
Soon enough Mildred got to the library and for a minute just stood at the doorway in awe of how big it was. -
Jack walked the dining hall feeling the wall as he walked. He remembered when he had to find out how to function with one eye he only walked with the help of the walls. He missed having two eyes. He rubbed his eye patch before walking faster. He just needed his semlors and he'd feel just fine again. He could even ask for some poison berries on the side. He wanted the sugary foods so he could ignore his troubled mind.
-
Mildred grinned. 'Awesome!' she exclaimed, practically jumping up and down. She walked through the bookshelves, looking for a book or three that interested her. She ended up with a pile of four and sat on a comfortable sofa chair near the end of the room, a pile of books at her feet and one in her lap as she poured over it.
-
Florence arrived at the dining hall and rang the bell. Wilhelm's face lit up like a lightbulb whenever he saw Jack. "Young master, what would you like to eat today?" Wilhelm asked. "I'd like the semlors, I smelled it earlier.... also can you add some berries, oh and some powdered sugar." Jack said. It was practically an invitation for Wilhelm to decorate the food.
-
Mildred read for a long time. Her legs were crossed on the sofa after taking off her shoes, and the book was cradled in her lap and she read it. She lost track of time when she was reading. Hours could pass and she'd still be absorbed in her book, the world around her just a blur.
-
Wilhelm brought out the semlors in warm milk spiced with cinnamon sugar. They had syruped berries on top Wilhelm also brought out the poisonous pie from earlier. "Wilhelm, did you make extras? That's unlike you." Jack said. "I wanted to make some pie to cheer you up." Wilhelm said proudly
