"Frederick had a knack for digging into people's heads. I think he just wanted to win the fight. To think it all started because of a little disagreement." Wilhelm said as he opened the gate to the garden. Jack was laying on his side, biting on his wrists and holding his throat as tears flowed down his face. He felt like his throat was on fire. Wilhelm rushed over with the pitcher
-
Mildred didn’t respond. She followed Wilhelm but stayed a few metres away from the two, not wanting to startle Jack or crowd him. She rubbed her arm as she thought that over. She wondered why Frederick had taken Jack’s eye. An argument didn’t seem like a good reason. Had Jack done something bad?
-
Jack drank the pitcher of blood quickly as the relief of his throat was washed over him. He wiped his eyes and took a few deep breaths. "Thank you Wilhelm, and thank you too Mildred." Jack said, looking to Mildred.
-
Mildred snapped out of her thoughts and gave him a weak smile. ‘Of course,’ she said, walking forward and sitting down next to him. ‘You okay now?’
-
"I'm fine. I just... Got a little moody and forgot to drink anything." Jack said. He nervously itched his neck.
-
Mildred nodded, deciding not to pry. ‘Right.’ She looked down at her hands and traced her finger in the dirt. She felt bad that Jack didn’t feel like he could drink blood in front of her.
-
"I really am sorry, Mildred." Jack said.
-
‘Why would you be sorry? It’s not your fault,’ Mildred said.
-
"Mildred, I made a very bad and uncomfortable situation that you had to help with. Of course I'd apologize. Plus the sight of me peeling my hands was no doubt unseemly." Jack said holding up his scratched hands.
-
Mildred glanced at his hands, then back at his face. ‘I don’t mind, really,’ she said, voice a little quieter than usual. ‘Promise.’
-
"you are too accepting. Someday I'm going to make a mistake and not catch it." Jack said. The thought brought memories out of jack. Bittersweet memories.
-
‘Everyone makes mistakes. I’ve made plenty in my time,’ Mildred said with a small smile. She looked up at the stars, after a moment speaking. ‘Jack?’
-
"yes?" Jack responded, looking to Mildred. He felt calmed by the garden and the moonlight giving the place a blueish glow
-
‘Do you think I can have a life here?’ Mildred asked, looking back at Jack. ‘I don’t think I want to go back to the human town.’
-
"of course you can. I will do everything in my power to make a life worth living here for you Mildred. If you choose to stay here I'll make sure it's not a bad decision." Jack said. He wanted to make sure Mildred would be happy if she stayed there. He surely liked having her around. In the time she was there, Frederick instead of being a painful memory had become more of a frustrating nuisance for awhile. Alexander felt more like a man who was resting instead of a dead one and he visited his garden.
