Mildred paused for a moment, then smiled. She leaned forward slightly and wrapped him in a side hug. She rested her head on his shoulder sighing quietly. ‘Thank you,’ she mumbled.

Jack was slightly flustered at this. "It's the least I could do." Jack said, awkwardly patting Mildred on the back. It had been a few years since he was hugged by anyone. Frederick was the last person to hug him. He felt... Warmer somehow. Like things were more okay.

‘For what? I’ve done literally nothing to deserve your kindness,’ Mildred said, patting his head playfully before pulling away. ‘I only thing I did was just so happen to exist and force you to talk to me.’

"you make me... Feel a little bit happier." Jack said, looking away. It was strange to say out loud

‘I make you feel happy?’ Mildred repeated, a little surprised. She smiled.

"yes. You managed to make the forever moody prince of undead a little less miserable for awhile." Jack said. He felt awkward saying that. He scratched at some moss between the stones of the gardens path.

Mildred chuckled. ‘You definitely seem a little less moody from when I first met you.’ She ruffled his hair.

"yeah, well, maybe I'm just having a lot of good days actually." Jack said. Holding onto his eye patch.

‘Well, good for you, then. I’m glad I can make you happy,’ Mildred said happily.

"I'm glad that you want to stay here." Jack said. He finally looked to Mildred and gave a slight smile

Mildred grinned back. ‘This is way better than the human towns. I’d be crazy if I didn’t choose here.’

"the human towns are a hundred years behind." Jack said. He knew his town was ahead technologically due to the immortality but he knew they were also they were far further ahead in certain sections of ethics.

‘Exactly. Heck, I don’t know why there haven’t been any rebellions recently,’ Mildred said.

"I was under the impression it was due to the oppression they'd face if they fought back." Jack said

'Most likely. There were a few rebellions around next year, though. I think a good number of the participants were killed,' Mildred said.
