"sounds like what I expected from the king. Imagine being a spineless coward like that man. I hope all his seeds were participants in the rebellion so he loses favor with the rest of the nobles." Jack said
-
‘The nobles actually helped with the execution. I think one of the duchess’s sons tried to stop it, but he’s not welcome in the palace anymore,’ Mildred said. ‘According to the papers he lives in a different town with his girlfriend now.’
-
"I'm glad he got away from the madness. The nobles can be as cruel as the king sometimes." Jack said
-
‘Me too. At least the cruel nobles have less power than the king, but still,’ Mildred said, pulling at a loose thread on her skirt.
-
"perhaps it's that strange old human practice of inbreeding. I honestly think it's more unsettling than watching someone fade in the sun. At least that isn't something we just do for no reason." Jack said shuddering at the unpleasantness. Vampires had never had such strange ideologies. Mayhaps it was because having a child that was a full blooded vampire was far more dangerous than having a normal child with a chance to be a vampire or it was because vampires couldn't stand the idea of marrying someone who knew their mothers for almost as long as they did.
-
Mildred snickered, not being able to stifle her chuckle. ‘It is very strange. I’ve never understood it myself, really,’ she said, wrinkling her nose at the thought of her “doing it” with Albert. Gross. ‘It’s disgusting.’
-
"exactly. Why should you marry someone who met your mother before you. It's very uncomfortable and immoral. I'm so glad it's just a thing human nobles do to show off." Jack said.
-
‘Heh, yeah. Rich people are very strange,’ Mildred said, rubbing her eyes with her hands. The night always made her tired. It must’ve been the darkness. ‘Nobles have far more strange traditions, anyway.’
-
"what other creepy things do the nobles do?" Jack asked, slightly disturbed.
-
‘I wouldn’t say just the nobles, but higher-up people in general. They have strange Christmas traditions, like putting pictures of boiling children in teapots in cards. I never got one of those, but my father told me about it. Rich people also put taxidermied birds on their hats,’ Mildred said.
-
"that's incredibly odd. It's very morbid for a mortal past time." Jack said. As far as he knew humans tended to avoid the idea of death.
-
‘I wonder if the birds ever smelled,’ Mildred said thoughtfully. ‘Do vampires celebrate Christmas?’
-
"well, some do. Some celebrate Hanukkah and some just like the feeling of the holiday and participate in the festivities like making a banquet for friends and family and singing songs about saint Nicholas and most importantly giving people small gifts like a homemade pair of shoes or a wreath with their favorite seasonal plants. One year I got a rare stone that creates rainbows if you hold it a certain way." Jack said.
-
‘That’s nice. Some of the human towns do these big celebrations. I went to a fair once,’ Mildred said, yawning.
-
"that sounds lovely. Sometimes we host village parties. A particularly popular one for the yuletide season is the decorating of the tree. In any case you sound exhausted Mildred. I think you ought to at least have a quick nap." Jack said.
