‘I love decorating trees. Alfred and I used to go looking for acorns and flowers to put in ours,’ Mildred said, shifting positions onto her side. ‘I suppose so. I’m still getting used to sleeping at day.’
-
"I understand the difficulty in the shift." Jack said as he stood up. He extended his hand to Mildred. "We can continue talking about festivities as we go inside. I have also always liked decorating trees. I used to have a lovely little glass figure of the whole royal family that me and Alexander would put on the tree. Unfortunately it was broken by vandals many years ago but I remember it fondly." Jack said.
-
Mildred took his hand and stood up. ‘That’s horrible. Did you find the vandals?’
-
"we were unable to find the vandals but we were able to find the glassblower. The poor man has arthritis and didn't want to make another masterpiece like it so we just had to leave the pieces in storage." Jack said. He walked along the garden path with Mildred back towards the castle.
-
‘Did you ever try fixing it? Perhaps with strong enough glue and careful hands you could put it back together,’ Mildred suggested, walking next to him.
-
"it would be pointless. The reason it was special was because it had my parents on it. It was the only real family portrait we had. It was commissioned while my mother was pregnant with me. It broke right across my father's face." Jack said
-
Mildred nodded. ‘So you couldn’t find all the pieces or something?’ she asked.
-
"I guess you can say that. When we put it back together there were large gashes where the cracks were, they were so big they practically chipped out my father's nose." Jack said.
-
‘Oh, right. That makes sense. I’m sorry that happened,’ Mildred said.
-
"it's fine. If that's bad to me, I can't imagine your pain. You couldn't have a portrait of your lost family. If you somehow had the money for it, it surely perished with them. It's like something out of some terrible tragedy where you silently beg the author for something happy to happen in the story." Jack said
-
Mildred kicked a pebble, averting her gaze to the ground. ‘We had one portrait. I don’t remember it being taken, but I was very young, around 2 years old at the most. Some people are just a bit unlucky,’ she said.
-
Jack opened the door for Mildred. "Bad luck is the bane of society." Jack said
-
‘It is. But there’s nothing we can do about it,’ Mildred said, walking inside.
-
"it is a necessary evil. It's just one that many of us wish to be rid of." Jack said
-
‘If only,’ Mildred mumbled, rubbing her eyes tiredly.
