"I'd prefer not to. They need me to be the pillar of government. They wouldn't take kindly to the king talking to them about being sad while they suffer though their own conditions and struggles of their social caste. The only one I could talk to about it would talk to me out of pity. Pity is not a great friendship starter." Jack said.

‘Yeah, I suppose that’s fair,’ Mildred said. ‘So you really have nobody? No friends, cousins..?’

"my cousins look at me with the same sort of pity. If It counts I can talk freely with Wilhelm and Cain. Wilhelm practically raised me and Cain is my personal butler but I don't call those friendships for a reason.

‘Why’s that?’ Mildred asked. That sounded a lot like friendship to her, but she supposed she couldn’t really say.

"because I pay them. It's a relationship built on money where I stand in a position of power. That's hardly fair to them." Jack said

‘Ah, right. Makes sense,’ Mildred said. She found it hard to believe Jack didn’t have any real friends. He didn’t even rob people.

"human kings would believe that all the nobles are their friends. I am not that naive. But how come you didn't have friends? I know it was most likely difficult to make friends due to your difficult situation but I imagine there were other unfortunate people who were also homeless or perhaps people you knew before the tragedy." Jack said

‘Oh, I did. My best friend got killed for thievery a couple years ago,’ Mildred said, looking up at the stars. Her friend had always liked the stars. He thought that when he died he’d turn into a star. ‘They always found reasons to kill people like us. Either that or we died of starvation, sickness and the such. I would’ve met the same fate if your men had never kidnapped me. It was hard to make friends because people thought you were too lowly, or if they were in a similar situation they thought you were a police officer in disguise.’

(I am trying so hard to not make Mildred a Mary Sue and I don’t think it’s working I am so sorry-)
Mildred blinked, looking back up at him. ‘A-Are you okay, Jack?’ she asked, confused by his sudden change in demeanour. She’d come to terms with the fact that not everyone was a good person long ago. And the fact that other people, who were probably in a more difficult situation than her, not wanting to be her friend made sense. People would do anything to stay alive. -
It's all good, she is definitely not a Mary Sue))
"I just can't stand the human kings. If I had their position for one week I would become more loved by the people and I'd fix their kingdoms but they just can't seem to figure anything out." Jack said, frustrated. -

‘They just think that they can do anything,’ Mildred said, tapping her fingers on her knees, brushing the dirt off the hem of her skirt. ‘And, to be honest, they can. -

"I'd stop them if I could. Unfortunately I doubt humans and vampires would be great at co-existing, also taking on a human kingdom would take a lot of resources. Plus there's uprisings to worry about." Jack said

‘I know you would. If humans and vampires coexisted, I’d think either of the races would die out eventually,’ Mildred said, picking at the grass. ‘Humans get cuts and scrapes all the time, which draws blood, and if all vampires are like you and they see or smell blood… well, it obviously wouldn’t end well. If vampires were to die out, it would be because lack of shelter or something and they’d be forced into the sun. Or humans would hunt them.’
