‘Oh, okay. Well, I wanted to apologise for getting upset earlier. It was out of line and I get what you were trying to say,’ Mildred said, picking at the skin on her palm.

"it's okay. I understand that most people are envious of what they don't have. Me included." Jack said. He stood up which prompted the moths to fly away.

Mildred gave a small smile, moving back slightly as the moths flew away. ‘Thank you,‘ she said quietly, picking at the grass.

Jack smiled back at Mildred. He thought she was far too compromising but he had himself to blame at this point for how uncompromising he was. "I'm sorry too. I should be less... Set in my ways? I think that's the best term to describe it. I should have listened to you. Humans have so little time and while that may seem nice to someone who hates immortality, I should look at how hard it is to have such a short life." Jack said

Mildred rubbed her arm, staying silent for a few moments. ‘It’s okay,’ she said quietly, avoiding his gaze for a few seconds, then looking up at him and smiling wider.

"I should be more understanding, it's not okay. Even if I am undead I'm not a monster." Jack said.

‘It is okay, I promise,’ Mildred said, hugging her knees to her chest. ‘You haven’t had the best experience with humans. I get if you think they have everything, especially after so many betrayed you and your brother.’

"well, in any case I'll be more mindful. Thank you for putting up with me even those times when I am insufferable." Jack said. He had to admit his own occasional stubbornness

Mildred shrugged. ‘You’re my only friend. Friends go through tough things together,’ she said.

"that they do, Mildred. That they do." Jack said before sitting down beside Mildred.

Mildred pat his back in a we’re friends and this is what friends do type of gesture. ‘Do you have a lot of friends, Jack?’

"would a guy with a lot of friends kidnap someone then keep them for entertainment before actually becoming friends with them." Jack said sarcastically.

‘Yeah, that’s fair,’ Mildred said with a short chuckle. ‘Do you have any friends? I mean, you’re not that bad, just a bit moody, but we can work on that.’

"do my own staff count? I kind of just feel pity from most people. I might be close to the heir of the varney duchy." Jack said

‘I mean… would you confide in them?’ Mildred asked, looking up at him.
