"I've been wondering about mortality and being elderly for many years. In our modern age of revolutions we have a chance but there's never been an elder vampire we know of." Jack said
-
‘Why not? You guys live forever, don’t you? There’s nothing that ends your life except for the sun,’ Mildred said.
-
"well, as you know rabbits were a fairly recent discovery for my people before them we had three options. Our options were to find a tree to drink sap from, or we could break into the human towns. We had to either drain their livestock of all their blood or we attacked humans. Humans weren't too keen on losing livestock and no one wants to die, so they tried to hunt us down. Once vampires participated in their first hunt they would already be hunted by angry humans." Jack said.
-
Mildred was used to clear right or wrong. She looked conflicted. ‘Wow. That’s horrible, for both sides,’ she said. ‘So the elderly weren’t able to protect themselves or something? They were more vulnerable so they were easier to kill? Or did they die of starvation?’
-
"vampires never got elderly. The oldest of the hunting generation would usually live to about 5000 if they played their cards right. They would either starve to death or they were caught by the hunters." Jack said
-
‘Are they able to get elderly now that you have the rabbits?’ Mildred asked. It was horrible that the vampires couldn’t live into old age, but then again… human peasants barely lived to the age of 60. Vampires got over 20 times that amount. 5000 years of life was so long.
-
"becoming elderly is in fact now a possibility. Rabbits are to vampires what farming was to humanity." Jack said. He remembered being scared for his first hunt for years as a young vampire.
-
‘That’s good,’ Mildred said quietly, focusing on Jack’s garden. She felt it was unfair vampires could live past 30000 and her brother hadn’t made it to his 20s.
-
"we actually used to have a cemetery with the names of the hunted vampires there. Unfortunately the fae took it but we made a monument instead." Jack said.
-
That seemed especially unfair to Mildred. ‘That’s good,’ she said, looking at a particularly interesting flower.
-
"do you like monotropa uniflora?" Jack asked as he looked at what Mildred was staring at
-
Mildred didn’t answer for a moment. ‘I suppose so. The little flowers hanging down look like ghosts.’
-
"they're more commonly known as the ghost flower. According to my gardener they're weeds that grow in foreign countries." Jack said
-
‘Interesting,’ Mildred said. She watched the flowers for a few moments more, eyebrows furrowed, before she looked away.
-
"Mildred, are you okay?" Jack asked he noticed she didn't seem to be doing well.
