Jack finally got up to do his paperwork, but he kept thinking about how much he'd miss Mildred.
The last unicorn was a surprisingly miserable and bleak tale for quite a few chapters. It was about a unicorn searching for the rest of the unicorns after some hunters mentioning them disappearing -
Mildred was extremely bored the first two chapters. She had a very short attention span, but kept reading so she'd find out who King Haggard is
-
The next chapter the unicorn got captured by an evil witch with two henchmen to be an act in her magical zoo. One of the henchmen revealed himself to be a slightly incompetent but kind wizard. The unicorn reveals to the reader that all of the curious monsters in the zoo are fakes except for the harpy. Jack continues his paperwork.
-
Mildred turned the page, intrigued.
-
The wizard, who introduces himself as smendric, attempts to free the unicorn who is very upset with being caged. Once smendric realizes he can't use his own magic to break the unicorn's cage he ends up using keys he pickpocketed from the other henchman of the witch. After the unicorn is freed she breaks the locks on all the cages including the fearsome, man eating harpy.
-
Mildred thought about how many jokes she could make with the name Smendric. She continued reading, propping her legs up on the headboard, wondering if harpies were like vampires.
-
The harpy immediately attacked the unicorn but then it saw a different target, the witch who had imprisoned her. Smendric and the unicorn left but soon after they were captured by bandits. The bandits spoke of an evil king who owned a bull made of fire
-
Mildred presumed the evil king was King Haggard. She didn’t think Jack had a bull made of fire.
-
Whenever the unicorn and smendric got to the camp they met a bandit woman named Molly gru. To escape the bandits smendric casted a spell to make specters of Robinhood characters appear. All of the bandits chased the specters except Molly Gru who stayed and recognized the unicorn. Molly Gru joined them and pointed them towards king haggard's castle where all the unicorns were
-
Mildred continued on reading, intrigued by the story.
-
The unicorn Molly Gru and smendric got all the way to a viewing point of king haggard's castle. They thought they'd find the others soon but as soon as night fell, a terrifying fire appeared in the forest. It was king haggard's bull of flames, the red bull. As it chased the unicorn smendric cast a spell to change the unicorn's form to save her from the red bull. The unicorn turned human.
-
Mildred shifted her position as she read, absorbed in the book completely.
-
The now human unicorn, whom they started calling amalthea, now traveled with her companions and met king haggard. The book described him as so old and dreary he seemed to suck the life out of the world around him. He had a nephew called prince lyre who kept watching amalthea. The next few chapters were lyre trying to court amalthea while she stared out into the sea.
-
Mildred wrinkled her nose. She kept reading.
-
Haggard ended up confronting amalthea. He tells her that only one thing ever brang him joy, watching the unicorns play in the ocean waves, so he made the red bull trap them in the sea. King haggard says amalthea is barely a unicorn anymore as she was going insane from the switch from immortality to mortality.
